I am thinking about fitting a high level brake light to my 1985 +8, the question is will it fit (the cyclops type)? how is it mounted? is it on some type of slider that allows removal of the spare wheel? Can anyone post any pictures and details please.

David,

Someone with more IT skills than I will no doubt put some pictures on for you but I can confirm that (a) the spare wheel access is not affected and (b) it is held on by just a couple of screws into the frame. Not sure about the wiring though?

Here for a good time not a long time!!

One point with the third brake light is that if it is obscured by a suitcase on the luggage rack it is regarded as not working. Although the third light is not a legal requirement, if you have one it must be working.

Some people remove them - but I didn't like the idea of being in a low car with a foreign lorry driver behind me - anything that would improve their chance of seeing me was welcomed!

When I had my Roadster I made up a light that would then fit on the suitcase - total cost was about forty quid.

I have the cyclop type on my car, from the fctory.
It does not affect spare wheel removal.
It does however impact on brake light swith, the one assembled to the hydrauics.Mine was replacd 2-3 times, until I replaced all 3 brake light bulbs with LED¨s.
Someone has chosen to instal a relay, as the switch itself can´t cope with the current from 3 bulbs. I think newer models has a mchanical switch on the brke pedal in the footwell.

Am I likely to get pinged in the UK for driving with luggage obscuring my cyclops one?

My 2009 Plus 4 has an extended 3rd brake light. I will take some pics and try a post in the next few days. I believe this was fitted by Uncle Melvin (Rutter)

Do the RoSPA advanced drivers course or the IAM equivalent and you won't worry about brake lights...

I took the the third brake light off of mine when I bought it, and have never felt vulnerable to traffic behind me, it's all down to observation and making sure you always have an exit plan.

Any electrical mods needed in order to change to LEDs? Or just switch? Any particular brand?

The LED lights was a direct replacement, with ordinary light bulb socket.
I bought mine at a car parts store in Norway. There are also many online supplers if you prefer shopping from your armchair.
