Hi just returned from a glorious run of over 200 miles and when I parkep up and removed the key I could hear a strange whinning noise coming from around the near side front left wheel. The only way I could stop it was by removing the battery terminal & then when re connected the issue was still there. I isolated the inertia switch & reset ( no difference) and then removed the fuses one by one to find out that its the Power steering pump that is running.Anyone had similiar issues ? What powers up/disconnects the power steering electrical supply ? ( besides the key) could it be a relay sticking ?
Any help appreciated

Not temperature related maybe? Needs fluid to cool before shutting off?

This is a well known fault with Mini power steering pumps when fitted in the Mini
There’s an updated pump, which I use when converting from the engine driven pump on the early S1 Aeros
The only fix that I know of, is unfortunately a replacement (and updated) pump

Hi -Thanks for suggestion I thought temperature has something to do with it. Cant think why its still energised- need to check out the relay I suppose the contacts could have welded thereby still powering the pump

Hi Simon -Thanks for input I note from previous posts that you are an expert in advising on issues. I think I need to trace the relay 1st to see if its sending power to the pump or does the Mini pump have a built in relay ?. Mine is a 2006 S3 what year did they upgrade the problematic Mini pumps (as per your post) ?

Anyone know of the Part number for the latest correct( Mini )Power steering pump ?
Cant find a relay that controls it so I guess the fault is inside the pump. Car Drives normally when engaged BUT i have to remove the 50amp fuse when parked up as it will not stop the pump from running and would either burn out or drain the battery i guess (whichever would come 1st).
Anyone know if they can be serviced/repaired ?
Where exactly are they fitted? (noise is by front nearside wheel) ?
How difficult is it to undertake a DIY repair/replacement ?
Thaanks in advance

When I had my power steering converted I bought a mini pump and sent it to a company called ECU TESTING LTD. It came back looking like new with a lifetime warranty.
The electric pump is under the nearside wing next to the oil filter.
You have to remove the bonnet, cowl and wing, along with the wheel,it's quite a straightforward job.

Thanks all for the contributions/advise received on the issue. FYI- The part number for the EHPS is 7625477132 exchange price £176.25. (upgraded version) with lifetime warranty.
Changed the oil (including the oil in steering rack itself).
Took the opportunity to replace the horns whilst wings were off for the twin Fiamm ones (recommended in a separate post). Sounds great and runs even better !.
Glad to be back in the Car - issue from start to completion 1 week but seemed a lot longer
