I finally, after too long really, got round to fixing the corrosion on my windscreen supports. I decided on a diy approach so it could be it ends up as a temporary measure; we shall see. Description with pictures here. The job isn't finished yet as I didn't make sure I had enough supplies but it looks promising.

Great write up , and sorely needed for many cars of that era I fear. I think the post chromed steel replacements are very prone to such corrosion.

I would agree with most of your steps, you can try a MILD alkali like sodium bicarbonate but be very sparing with it , as strong alkalis are aggressive to aluminium.

The last step of a clear lacquer is probably one of the most important . By eliminating the oxide layer you expose the surface of the metal , and this is likely to be reactive and will oxidise. , I would certainly recommend using a clear lacquer to protect it.

I am afraid that my knowledge of aluminium compatible coatings is now about 15 years outdated , but I am sure you have found something suitable.

Steve Simmonds have a solution for that, but as he said the fist series of this pillar have too much silicone in the mix so sooner than later the same problem will appear, the solution is replace them by the later one from MMC, or buying the one from Morgan Flaving They are chromed.

Hello Andy

Loctite gasket remover is made to work with aluminium and did this very well although I was surprised to have to get it online as the local parts shop has stopped keeping it. As for lacquer, I just found an automotive lacquer that claimed to have good adhesion to aluminium. If that claim is as good as its quick drying claim it should be very good, time will test that, but I am sure it won't last for ever anyway.

There are metal finishing companies here that can plate a set for much less than Morgan Flaving are asking or you can nickel plate yourself and bright nickel looks good and would match the steel windscreen.

brass and chrome supports are best?

The fixings will be the first point to give up lacquer and you'll be back where you started?

I can't argue with that, and you have prompted me to add some extra round the fixings to stop that for as long as possible, but for a total cost below £20 it will do for now.

That'll be a good job done for 20 notes plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself, it's easier but pretty soulless just buying alternatives.

I looked at it a few years ago when I first heard of it. At that time it was an exchange arrangement which suggests they were plating the ones they received back which would be much easier and cheaper than getting new ones cast. Clearly plenty of time has elapsed for that to have changed and I have not looked recently.
