Hi all, just wondered if anyone can recommend any decent roads to take as i'm heading to the Lakes in a couple of weeks (hopefully in the Mog) from Oxfordshire. i will probably use the motorway at some point but would rather take good A roads if i can link them up with some local knowledge.
Thanks
Dave

A65 or A66 is my preferred route.
The A66 avoids towns and is a quick way across from Scotch Corner on the A1.

Just got back from there yesterday after a great week based just outside Kendal. We drove up from Kent breaking the journey at Matlock. We took the M6 from Knutsford. There are some great drives once there. I particularly liked the Kirkstone Pass.

We go to Morgans at Windermere every year. May have to miss this year, though. Love the area for drives. There is a “10 passes “ route we were given...a full day through10 inc Hardnott etc. Be adventurous and go off the main routes using a good map. Well worth it.

Where will you be staying in the Lake District Dave? That might give you (and us) a better clue as to more interesting roads to use to get there. If the northern area I'm sure Ken (UVK33N) will pop up with some good driving roads

If you are going to the North Lakes I agree with Dave on the A66 but for a change we drove from Thirsk off the A1M via a few small roads to the B684 via Leyburn and Hawes and Dent. A "B" road but very nice. A bit slower than both of Dave's routes.
Looking at it, you will have had plenty of driving that day, so go one of the more direct routes and visit that road later in the week if out for a run.

If you are around West Cumbria - the coastal road is great - especially over Corney Fell (behind Black Combe) with the longest uninterrupted view in Englans - on a clear day you can see Scotland, Wales, Ireland & the Isle of Man. Give my Dad a wave - he`s up on top of Black Combe and always wanted a Morgan.

Back to front, I know, but my preferred route out of Lancaster is always the trough of Bowland then round the east side of Manchester and over snake pass. It beats the M6 hands down. Have a good trip.
