Sounds like the cat, mines a 2012 too.

Some diesel cars have a soot filter before the lambda sensor, but I have not come across a petrol one that does. Sounds more like it is part of the CAT.

The CAT is in the slightly fatter part of the header, down near the joint with the main exhaust. If there was something at the top of the pipe then it's news to me - my 2013 car is clear of anything. I cannot for one second believe that you need this 'filter' in the upper part of the pipe, so I'd put them back on and see how it goes.

When the dealer actually showed me the location on the exhaust that he had described on the phone, it was a little different (see pics)

I decided to take the car back minus filter, but it is now very loud. Too loud in fact.
Someone suggested to me that this filter might be an exhaust “cone”, for optimising back pressure and/ or sound
Does anyone have a picture of the exhaust from the same angle with the cone in place? Or better still a parts diagram for the sports exhaust that might show what this is, and what to order to replace it?

Yes, that appears to be an ex catalytic converter.

Just googled Harley Catalytic converter (loads of pages on how to remove them!) and I think you’re right!

Is there any impact on the engine from running de-catted on one side only?

The back pressure will not be balanced and may well cause the motor to run 'lumpy' ,imho remove the surviving cat the engine will thank you😀

Indeed, engine runs soooo much better without them (both, natch).

I am probably misunderstanding this: If you remove the cats won't you need to reprogram the ECU as it will be expecting cats?

No,the ECU makes its own adjustment (mlne did) and runs the better for it.
Your other option is to replace the down pipe with a new one with a cat in it (pricy and probably on a leadtime)
