John, when they did go off before the fault was this like a delay timer after the door was shut ?

I've noticed some 2018 models have a delay which must mean the circuit is fed from a lighting module canbus (like a mini ecu)

Yes you are right Jon I do recall a say 20 second or so delay when the doors were closed before the lights went out. Excuse my lack of technical know how but does that mean I could be looking for a fault in this lighting module canbus and how do I rectify that, do I simply purchase a replacement , do I find it in the fuse compartment?

On the later cars it is a metal box about A5 in size usually just laid flat in the fuse & relay box, it's called the 'body control unit' and is full of electrickery best left alone, within this is a 'interior light control' which will be the delay timer which I suspect has failed

One thing worth checking is ALL the fuses as the BCU has lots of internal connections dealing with light circuits & as LED's will run off such a tiny ampage a blown fuse to a seamingly unrelated light may still be enough to backfeed a supply

I think your fusebox top should be labelled, but this should help too...

One final point is that a 2016 car should still be under warranty ?

I would get it to a dealer under warranty. I am on my second PCB board in 5 years of ownership in my car. They cost £500 plus VAT and for now the lights are wired on permanently as otherwise I have no indicators etc.

This sounds expensive.

In the mean time you could take the bulb out.

In the good old days here was no fancy panel (or rubber sheet as in my Roadster) under the dash hence if you left the lights on the light pollution provide the light.
