If I'm not wrong it's some kind of a passive inductive key.

I always turn on then give it a couple of seconds for everything to settle then turn the engine over - always starts when doing this - if I try to turn it on in one step sometimes it is just dead & I have to try again. This is a 2010 4/4 sport.

I checked the OBD2 with a scanner -> no errors recorded, all ok
I swapped the key (no battery) -> same result, same problem

If you leave the ignition off for 20 mins you need two attempts to start, if you switch off for less it starts immediatly.

As far as I know the electronics go 'asleep' a few minutes after the ignition is turned off. Could it be related to that?

As someone said, it could be caused by a getting tired battery. How old is yours?

It is possible that an older battery supplies enough power/ current for the starter, but too little voltage for the ECU.

Ok, can your dealer replace the ECU with another one just for a moment of a try. Then you could narrow the problem down. Or before that reconnect all the harness and plugs regarding the ECU, and the battery as well. Smetimes the devil is in such details.
And perhaps your dealer can bridge the immobilizer for a moment of try.

I'll watch this over time now, the car starts reliably latest on the 2nd attempt.

@ Heinz: My dealer is 50km's away and I cannot spend a full day there. From time to time I have to work....

Looking at the symptoms again......
The problem occurs when the car has been unused overnight.
I wonder if it is the ecu and/or immobiliser losing some “memory” related data or needing the two attempts to trigger the memory to kick in and allow a start.
Worth a check, I think. Also is the ecu to immobiliser link being affected by this same effect? Maybe checking both could be worth it.

Hi Sospan, I think this is going the right direction, but how can you check this?

I read in a Ford-related website that they have an immobiliser light showing whether a key was properly identified (https://thecarkeyman.co.uk/ford-car-key-problem/)

Since the 4/4 uses Ford electrics/electronics there may also be such a light in our cars? Maybe somewhere under the dash?

Is somebody aware of such an LED?
