The RAC will just be trying a spare bulb kit at an inflated price like they used to sell that silly yellow headlight paint. Good idea to upgrade the headlights, Wipac do a conversion kit that looks very original:

Then you should go for Ciebe 7" replacements available at many outlets at around £50 each, they superior to anything else of that type.

I would go with Cibie H180 as an upgrade. Better quality than most.

There are some for sale here - no idea if the vendor is reputable - this is the result of a quick google on “ 7” Sealed Beam Cibie H180 Upgrade “

Never understood the French requirement to replace headlight at the side of the road, does that mean all French drivers with auto adjusting LED headlamps have to carry a pair of headlamp assemblies with them?

Or is it only a requirement for GB plated cars?

For France you need:
advance warning triangle
High viz jacket
Alcohol test
It is only recommended to carry spare bulbs ( i guess that this prevents one from getting fined for a broken light, if you can replace it directly, given the fact that there is no EU country where more cars if broken lights drive around than France, I would not be too worried)
Cheers,
Bert

Apparently although it's law to carry a breath test kit the law to fine you for not carrying one was never enacted, not that I'd have bothered with it anyway.

I have always carried a selection of 'random' bulbs - meaningless really. Many of the cars I've had have virtually required an engine out job (not quite) to replace large sealed units. They certainly couldn't be replaced at the side of a road.

I replaced my headlights with these too.....from Librands I think. Excellent light performance for what they are. I did buy some Lucas Tribar lights..... they were dreadful with light scatter all over the place. Looked the biz though.

Indeed they are, reputable suppliers I use are Minispares (Potters Bar) and Mini Sport (Padiham)

For total originality you can still get sealed beam, but they both stock upgrade kits to move to halogen, way cheaper than Mog prices for identical parts
