I have just got a 1981 plus 8, will I need to use a lead additive or will be ok without?

Has it got hardened valve seats. Best check but IMO you will be OK on unleaded because the heads are ally with inserted valve seats - the cars that had issues mostly were those with cast iron heads I believe.

Has it been sold to the US at that time,,,with the same specification? Then it should be fine to use unleaded petrol.

My understanding was that all Rover V8's were fine on unleaded as that was what they were originally designed for.
