Is there a new car for sale in the UK, with the same (or less) safety equipment (fitted) than a Trad?
Following an NCAP zero star crash test result late last year, the Fiat Punto is being withdrawn from sale in the UK Reading the link it scored zero percent in one category of the test as it offers no modern safety aids, such as lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking or a seatbelt reminder which isn't quite the same thing as a zero star crash test. How would a Morgan get on? "The test gave the Punto scores of 51%, 43% and 52% respectively for protecting adults, children and pedestrians in the event of an accident – for comparison, the Ford Fiesta scored 87%, 84% and 64% in the same three tests."

Tarka has seatbelt warning lights and airbags...plus side impact protection bars. So some crash protection.
Lane keeping assistance is something I have no use for, automatic emergency braking is't essential but is quite useful.
I think Morgan Trads wouldn't do very well in pedestrian safety, but then neither would a Caterham or Atom... or any motorcycle, or commercial vehicle.
My view is that the NCAP Ratings for driver aids should not have the same weight as accident safety and crash protection. Another example of a a well intended and useful scheme being dumbed down by the nanny state.

I would rate our chances a bit higher in the Punto compared to a morgan. It was brought home to me in a tunnel around Paris.With sidescreens and roof off the noise and the sight of a lorry wheel about three feet away towering over us tends to concentrate the brain.

Driver aids......
A mix of true safety improvement and dumbing down/distracting devices.
Decide which category your car’s “gadgets” fall into.
How many do you actually use if they have a switch off option?
I sometimes wonder if soft tops will be banned for safety reasons unless fitted with rollcage type options. I bet some safety nannies are considering it! The airbag rules are a first step.
