I also think that smaller volume specialist manufacturers will survive. The non mainstream industry is too valuable to be lost with revenue/jobs. Even the eco-nanny groups would need huge influence over and above the present level to entirely stop the likes of Morgan’s trad design.
MMC would have to get the balance right for trad and newer designs though.

Just read some replies I missed.
Re Li ion batteries.
Yes they flare up if punctured. Go to YouTube!
A few weeks ago I watched a documentary about a US university lecturer who is developing a non liquid electrolyte battery that does not react like current liquid ones. It could be punctured, cut with scissors into bits and still produce electricity with no adverse reactions. It used a form of plastic sheet for the electrolyte ( a very basic description!)He was at the stage of working on developing it for large scale production. In his demo he made a small cell and connected electrodes in a matter of minutes to show the basic design. It reminded me of making a cheese toasty!

Open question...
Is there a new car for sale in the UK, with the same (or less) safety equipment (fitted) than a Trad?
Following an NCAP zero star crash test result late last year, the Fiat Punto is being withdrawn from sale in the UK

I should add that I asked Morgan's James Gilbert about the Trad range and he told me there was no foreseen legislation that would kill it off.
Did he say that? Well, I always admire optimists.
Presumably Mr. Gilbert is well acquainted with the foreseen legislation and can give an authoritative answer. His attitude to unforeseen legislation would be more interesting. I suspect that young James is not wanting create any speculation and not wanting to upset the boss either!

A famous car designer told me that he and several other famous car designers had bought the first-generation Punto for their wives, because they admired the 'packaging' as well as the value for money. Then one of them had noticed that the front and rear crush zones overlapped and they all shifted them rapidly. It is astounding that Fiat did not address the problem properly in subsequent versions.

Following an NCAP zero star crash test result late last year, the Fiat Punto is being withdrawn from sale in the UK Now I find that interesting. I thought EU standards were harmonised across the EU.

Following an NCAP zero star crash test result late last year, the Fiat Punto is being withdrawn from sale in the UK Reading the link it scored zero percent in one category of the test as it offers no modern safety aids, such as lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking or a seatbelt reminder which isn't quite the same thing as a zero star crash test. How would a Morgan get on?
