Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of technology developed for racing to be used to improve road cars, but I get the impression that McLaren don't see F1 success as being the be-all and end-all of their existence and ability to build road cars - witness the fact that this year their F1 budget at EUR250m is a bit more than half of that of Mercedes or Ferrari.

I've never had the privilege of driving or even riding in a McLaren, but from what I have read they seem to have managed the trick of building supercars/hyper cars which have stunning performance but which are also a realistic proposition as everyday drivers. I think that's pretty remarkable and to be applauded.

The technology is used to make them drive like very competent road cars, but no doubt in the hands of an accomplished race driver (which I’m far from!) they can deliver extraordinary performance. The McLaren guys will say on a non-quotable basis, that the 720S is faster round the Nurburgring than a P1 (and some of the other similar cars) as they run out of battery power and then they have a severe weight handicap! It’s also faster on some of the other tracks too, but not Silverstone for example where the power of the hybrid hypercars tells...

If you want a go in the 720S, I think you would like it and its technology being an IT specialist, but it does not intrude on the driving experience, then if we can agree a suitable date we can meet somewhere convenient and I’ll bring it. Your call Tim?

That's an extraordinarily generous offer, Brian. Thank you so much. Frankly I don't think there is any doubt whatsoever as to whether I would like it!

I'm off to Scotland in a couple of days for a hoon about in the Morgan, I'll be in touch when I get back.

One of the reasons I still find Lotus attractive (even if foreign owned) - they are made in the UK. smile
