I've got a 2 day rental coming up from BHM to see what I think of the experience.

Well I’m really not that into cars

Just into Morgans

I didn’t hanker after a classic or any other car before I had a Morgan and if I didn’t have my Morgan I wouldn’t get anything else, I’d just turn my garage into a wargaming and hobby room

I like looking and reading about cars but I have absolutely no wish to own anything else

However, I soon realised the Caterham I p/xd had more stowage space, handled like a dream, effortless precise steering and seemed altogether more accomplished on these roads. It was also blisteringly quick too but I'd have happily sacrificed that for a Morgan that at least drove something like as nicely.

Peter, you make some excellent points in your post, thank you.

Nope, glad I at least bought one and never waffled about it, just sad I never fully got in to the groove with it.........as I will still always have a soft spot for Morgan, and admire them when I see them.

Thanks again lads.

Had I ever owned a Trad rather than just experiencing them on test drives I would have written a very similar piece to your first comments Kenny. But listening to the guys on here, I dont think that its the car that is wrong or in some way faulty. Instead its just that you like me want the pleasures that come with a fast modern car. For us the feel of a car of a different generation isnt charming so much as simply old.
The only surprise about your comments is your being positive about a Caterfield, which to me are crude basic and IMO unsafe kit cars.

Horses for courses in other words. If you want the feel of a 1930s british sports car without all the aggro that comes from ageing mechanics and bodywaork, then the Trad is the answer. If you want a modern sports car then Lotus every time. Where the Aero fits into this is an altogether different question.

Thanks Howard, appreciate the honest and eloquent reply.

I agree with most you say, I'm no spring chicken by the way and have driven or owned most of the Brit classics.
I just felt that a 17 plate brand new 4/4 should and could have been more adaptable and user friendly than what it was.

The only rival I've owned that I can compare it to is the Caterham, or as you call it a Caterfield smile It's like me calling the 4/4 a Moss Malvernagan lol

Caterham aren't perfect but the build quality, ride and overall feel betters what I experienced with the Mog.

As for safety I'd pick the Beemer over both cheers

The problem is that the prices will be even higher....so other factors such as leaks and rattles need to be attended to as well.

Blimey.....reading that back, a couple of years ago I’d never have thought I’d utter such comments! I got into Morgan wanting a modern classic with all the old fashioned traits but with modern reliability. Going to SSL five link must have started the rot 🙄

What a great reply and thank you, appreciate that. Morgans are expensive but a great possession to own. However as you identify they do need a huge suspension upgrade. Sure, greasing sliding pillars and being battered by unforgiving leaf springs may indeed appeal to some but it can't last. Yes it's quirky but not needed. Save a great little car in its purest 4/4 form but modernise it, sales would grow I'm certain.

Getting back into the replacement engine question i am no expert but I believe Mazda do a couple of engines which would match up nicely with the gearbox. They're in a little roadster called a MX something or other :-)

My hope is whatever engine the 4/4 ends up with it retains its lively, keen to rev zesty nature. The nimble handling and light weight aided by such a gem of an engine are what give character. Its character that helps us forgive little things like drafts/leaks and suspension "shortcomings".

The Mazda MX thing would be a worthy donor of its brilliant 1.5 skyactiv power unit.

But I think its going with the Mondeo lump instead. Not sure how Morgan will market the 4/4 and plus 4 but no doubt they will have a plan!

To make comparisons with any other modern car is to miss the point of owning the trad Morgan. I find my 4/4 a unique drive and the taste for more is ever present. Its done 56000 miles in my hands. Despite being in my mid-seventies I still enjoy this responsive little gem. Sometimes a gentle pootle through Devons' country lanes. Sometimes a spirited drive further afield, but always very rewarding.
