Thanks to all for your help. Now up running. I tried rotating the plastic outer ring, it came away in my hand revealing an amber coloured ring surrounding the ignition key hole. Although the amber ring felt quite solid, I gave it a firm technical jiggle. Tried both keys and now working ok. So the normally slow flashing immobiliser light flashes rapidly if the ignition is turned on but the key is not detected, goes solid them diminishes if a key is detected.

Ian,
Good to know it's sorted, the immobiliser ring does seem to be a recurring issue with Mogs

Well done. I hate modern car electrics , far too complex.

Well I'm glad you are mobile again but now I am puzzled. When I arrived home with my 2010 Roadster I found the plastic outer ring in the door pocket. I glued it back on but there was no orange ring in there. The immobilzer light always flashes slowly too, never varying in speed and extinguishes at position three which is when I normally push the start button - at the moment the engine fires up at this position but that's because I've shorted something out and haven't solved that one yet. Anyway, does this mean that they are all different? I dream of a new Morgan without electronics, a bit like Charlie Ware's Minors.

I had deliberately referred to my 2008 Roadster in my post above, if Ian's car was designed that way. So it was easier to narrow it down.
I later on had a 2010 Roadster Sports. This car had this immobilizer without such a loose ring. But it was a late 2010 production. This car had also never caused such problems. In the middle of 2010 MMC changed the system.
Meabh, do you have an earlier regular 2010 Roadster (which contains the mentioned immobilizer system which Ian also has) or the Roadster Sport with the wider front (and a changed immobilizer system).?

Heinz. I have a Nov 2010 Roadster Sport ( ordered by Richard Thorne garage) with the wider front frame. I have had no problems with ignition ( apart from me messing up the back of the push button start switch) but it is interesting that there are these differences.

Heinz/meabh My car is December 2010. Maybe I confused with my reference to the amber ring. It is the quite solid plastic ring surrounding the keyhole, gave it a good push and hey-presto keyhole by Ian David Bell, on Flickr

Ah ok, I never saw this so much close up. So I learn how the immobilizer works on the later on 2010 cars as well. Good you have solved the problem.

Good info, it does seem to be a reoccurring issue. The immobiliser circuit and the key ignition area has caused quite a few issues for owners recently
Although problems with loose amber rings might need a visit to the proctologist
