I'm going to the New Forest later this month to visit the Beaulieu National Motor Museum amongst other things. I'm staying at the Master Builders Hotel at Bucklers Hard. The hotel has a nice enough restaurant but I've eaten there several times and would like to try something new. So have any of you any recommendations for a good restaurant for dinner within easy driving of Bucklers Hard? A good forest location would be perfect. It's a bit of a special occasion so some wow factor to impress SWMBO would be nice!
Any thoughts guys?

Never been, but The Pig at Brockenhurst seems quite special and not too far away. A bit further, but If you really want to push the boat out how about Chewton Glen at Highcliffe.

Never been to 'The Pig' in Brockenhurst.
Chewton is always lovely - especially for lunch when you can hang around afterwards and really enjoy the amenities, have afternoon tea etc.
Limewood Hotel (Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst) is great if you are a real foodie type - we're not, but we still love it. Celebrity chef partnership means it has the wow factor.

to add to the list how about "The Mill at Gordleton" ,Hordle,
not as up market as Chewton Glen but could be worth a look.

For a river view. Royal Southampton Yacht Club at Gins Farm about 10 to 15 mins by road from Bucklers hard or 5 mins by boat

Been to the Pig a few times...quirky but good, both meat and fish. To the north of the forest is Les Mirabelles at Nomansland. French provincial food, always good. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. In the end we went to the Pig in Brockenhurst and had a great evening. It is as Peter said a little quirky its restaurant very bistro belying the rather grand country house exterior, but it worked well. The menu was again different and sourced from a 25 mile radius so plenty of fish as well as meat, mostly pork ( what a surprise). A very enjoyable experience which I would happily repeat!
