I've been thinking recently that I might lose the interior rear view mirror and rely on my new convex door mirrors.

I can angle the side mirrors such that I can see most of what's behind and let's face it truck and van drivers don't have internal mirrors.

The forward view without the Internal mirror is much improved and one would soon get used to relying on the door mirrors.

Other thought and opinions???

In my 4/4 (and in all my other tin-tops, come to think of it) the rear-view mirror gives a much more representative sense of distance between me and any following car. For that reason (and despite the fact that in a Landie or G-Wag I do primarily use the door mirrors) I would not be without the rear view mirror to give a better sense of distance behind for pulling out to overtake & pulling in after lane-changes etc. May explain why some van drivers drive the way they do... innocent

I can imagine that could cause a problem for the MOT.

I think you are taking a risk, when I had aero screens you lose the mirror unless dash mounted, I missed it. But your call as to what you do

MOT wise your be ok with the two door mirrors - the central one is only a requirement where the nearside ( passenger) door mirror is missing. Put simply - for MOT you need the offside ( drivers ) door mirror and one other - either the nearside door or central interior one.


Personally I would stick with 2 door mirrors and a central mirror - go for a smaller one if you like - they work really well and look great.


I Did an advanced driving course with ROSPA last year and their instructors opinion as that a central mirror is essential for road safety.

I removed the interior rear view mirror and found that the forward view was much improved. Come mot test time my Morgan passed just as Andy has said its not required when side mirrors are fitted. As an added bonus it improves the appearance of the car in my opinion. I can't say I miss it but perhaps my years of riding Harley choppers either with one mirror or none at all have made me biased.


Addicted to Morgans. 44 years and still not cured.

I drove my last Mog for a week or so without a windscreen mounted mirror when I fitted the folding windscreen and I was amazed at how nicer the forward view was without it being there

I did fit a small dash mounted mirror later and I didn’t really consider the idea of going without a rear view mirror but if you don’t need it for an MOT and the door mirrors do the job for you, I can see the positives for the freeing up of the forward vision

Think others have covered this now but, personally I find the central mirror is the one I use most as it can be glanced at regularly without diverting ones eyes too far from the road ahead. I use the side mirrors more for lane changing etc. The central mirror, small but slightly convex, is fitted to a rod and can be adjusted up and down for use with or without the hood. Whilst the view ahead would be clearer I don't think that I would now be comfortable without this arrangement.

Hi Bob

Running my Supersports with aeroscreens now and managed ok without a center mirror for a while just using the John Taylor round mirrors.

Having a HGV (LCV) license using side mirrors is second nature but I eventually fitted a small crash pad mounted rear mirror as I found that as has been mentioned I found it easier to judge vehicle distances with the center mirror.

Also easier to apply my makeup whilst on the move !!!

Did he mention motorbikes? What did he say about trucks and vans - that they were all dangerous?
