there is this really interesting documentary on the "myth Gotthard, pass of the pioneers" on ARTE TV. 90 mins. https://tinyurl.com/yb3njbmzA must see for any Gotthard fan! Now I am in love with this pass.

fantastic views, nice documentary.
Can't wait to go skiing now, and still at least 3 months to go...
The melting of the glacier is worrying, however.
In which extent 'we' contribute to that is debatable, but I've been going to the same ski region for the last 40 years and the long-term change in the alps is quite noticeable..

now you caught my interest: where do you ski? [/quote] In Austria, mostly Kitzbühel region. But also Switzerland (Wengen) and France sometimes. Pre-season in Kaprun or Sölden in Austria when I can convince my lady at home that it is really neccessary

On my frequent van trips to Italy in the 80's and 90's I tried most of the passes. My favourite though especially when I had the opportunity to journey on a bike was the Splugen. An M3W taking the numerous tournante and then the sound echoing through the many galleria would be an awesome experience.
I also once went skiing with my Italian hotel host to Madesimo en-route to the Splugen from Lake Como.
