I know it might be a considerable difference in cost etc but I just keep a spare set of alloys fitted with winter tyres and when the weather dictates fit them on my daily driver and it works really well
A very good solution if you get a lot of snow and are very dependent on being mobile.
For me the autosocks are a 'reasonable' cost solution in terms of balancing having something in the car in case it snows versus the (in)frequency with which personally I am likely to be affected by snow.
I noticed on some comments that in Scandinavia some people still carry the socks even if they have snow tyres in case the going gets really difficult. I don't know if this is a sensible precaution in their harsher climate.
What I like is the fact that they do not take up boot space like my snow nets do and they are much quicker/easier to fit. Jacking up the wheels in the snow is not my favourite pastime!
A friend of my brother also found the socks great for getting up her steep drive when it was just iced over - her FWD vehicle couldn't make it up until she popped the socks on wherupon it apparently went up like it did normally.
