Managed to get a spare set of wheels and would like to cover them in some decent track rubber.

Anyone know from experience which tyre to go for?

Yep..... been making a LOT of calls about this reciently. My considerations were:

Pirelli P-Zero Corsa
Pirelli P-Zero Corsa System
Toyo R888
Yokohama A048
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Cup

All in 225/45/R18

The advice I have managed to piece togeather is the following:

1) Pirelli P-Zero Corsa System is not recommended best stick with Corsa.

2) Corsa is great for DRY and cold/medium temperature conditions where the track is not to twisty (generating heat) as they go "off" quickly after only a few laps.

3) Toyo R888 - Great Track/race Tyre very compromised on the road, but sold out and extremely hard to get hold of in the required size.

4) Yokohama A048 - basically a very good compromise tyre, good on track - Not quite as good as the Pirelli in the cool but better in all other conditions including rain. Also good performing road tyre.

5) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup - expensive, not good in wet especially on the road. On dry day very quick not quite as much longevity as Yoko's.

Overall recommendation was for the Yoko's.

I did some research on purchasing Yoko's (basically phoned every re-seller, distributor and Yoko themselves in the UK and found that Yokohama A048 - 225/45/18 are on back order and a delivery of only 20 units are due into the UK in late July. 8 of which have already been sold.

The best advice I recieved from any person was from Micheldever Tyre Services - Race Support department - The guys who support several Porsche cup cars and other GT/Britcr/racing teams. I spoke to the guy who actually does the tyre testing and seemed to have real hands on knowledge rather than catalogue blurb.

Best Price on 225/45/18 Yoko's -

Coming from the Atom forum, there're lots of tyres threads, the general consensus are that both the Yoko and Toyo tyres are preferred, but Toyo also has a price advantage, both tyre patterns are the same but the Toyo has a more squarer profile than the rounded profile of Yoko. I had the Yokos on my Atom, and they were just unbelievable, Toyos are just as good according to other members, cares are needed tho when wet, or else you could be slithering towards the scenery at the first corner you come across

I had soft front and medium rear on my Atom, I'm guessing that for a much heavier Aero, it probably best to have hard all round.....

In the larger sizes required for the Aero there is only a Med/Hard compound available. Med/Soft is not imported to the UK for this size.

If you are looking for a tyre for road and track which performs significantly better then the Pierlli P-Zero Rosso's then either:

Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Anymetrico - Night and day compared to just Rosso. Have tested this tyre combo back-to-back personally.

Toyo T1-R - Had these on my TVR Cerbera... stunning tyre for general road use - also have rim-protection. Cheap.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050 - Have these now on BMW Z4. Fantastic lateral grip, possibly not as soft as T1-R. Also has Rim Protection.

These are the best 'std' road tyres you can get and alot of sprinters/hillclimbers use them if they have to use the std road tyres. Brilliant in the wet.

Kumho also make an excellent tyre in the Ecsta V70 (V700) which is available in numerous compounds. The supersoft one is as good as a slick but only good for sprints. HArder compunds would do for track days.

I have experience with the Pilot cups on the Porsches and they are awesome but as mentioned....in the wet they are scarey.

I'm gonna try and get prices/ delivery on the Toyos....the word on the street is that they are excellent and value.

How much is the best price for the yokos?....dont use the dredded pound sign.

Adams & Page specialise in Yokos - www.adamsandpage.com - and would probably quote.

Would appear that Toyo are only available in 40's
