This instruction is one of the last instructions in the manual!
I can seem to get into the Image Library today to download a copy but I can it repeat here:
'GENERAL HINTS AND TIPS, LEARN THESE AND PRACTICE THEM ON ALL OCCASIONS AND YOU WILL NOT GO FAR WRONG
1. Cleanliness is essential in everything to do with a motor vehicle, its fuel and lubricants.
2. Tools must be properly kept and used.
3. Excessive speed is uneconomical, causes wear and tear to vehicles, and is the cause of most accidents. Drive carefully and get there intact.
4. Ensure that EVERYTHING is tight and secure, is running cool, and has adequate lubrication.
5. Watch you tyre pressures. - Keep them to the correct pressure.
6. Watch your oil gauge or indicator.
7. Nurse your accumulators. - Keep them charged, clean, and the electrolyte topped up with distilled water 1/4 inch over the tops of the plates.
8.Check correct working order of brakes immediately after starting.
9.Replenish your vehicle before putting it away.
10.Do not interfere with your vehicle beyond your capacity.'
It all looks obvious but I may be guilty of transgressing that last one!
I suppose what we should remember is that these instructions were aimed at young recruits who may have only rarely been in a private vehicle and certainly never driven or taken responsibility for one. In the case of my mother and father they were only in their late teens and early twenties at this time. My mother was in the ATS driving trucks and more latterly, a la Foyles War, a colonel's driver all over the West and East Ridings. They became Morgan owners later in their lives and had 35 years of top down motoring by the way. To this day my Mother, now 97 prefers the Morgan to anything else. Dad's passion for Morgan's started as a schoolboy when he was taken out to Cockhill Moors in an Anzani engined Aero in 1930. Their army experience of motors, driving and maintenance never left them.
