I dont have my car nearby to test but would a suitably sized O ring slid over the splines for the boss to press do the job? I did this on my car and it takes up all the slack giving a firm tight wheel

The size I used was 1" id 1/8" thick. Slips down to the bottom where the wheel sits and takes up the slack

correction, the id on the 0 ring is 15/16 by 1/8 thick. For those in the US, the part is made by Danco, part number 96735 and is labeled as a #18 O ring 1 3/16 od x 15/16 id x 1/8
