The bearing under the main (upper) spring works only under compression which is the normal running. The only concern for the lower bearing is perhaps the stamping of the balls on the tracks due to the fact that the bearing has two states: free with a lot of play and compression.

My 4/4 is light on all counts. I've had each trad model over the years and if you are looking for light and nimble, the 1600 4/4 with Mazda gbox is as old school as you can get. It's the essence of fling it around and accounts for the enduring appeal of Morgan's smallest. But if you wish to tour in it the larger cars offer more comfort at the cost of heavier controls.
Bet you fall for the 4/4.
But luckily, we all disagree very happily.

No balls   ETA: In any case don't think the shock loads will be too severe given this bearing is working with both sprung and damped components.

Balls or rollers, the problem is the same, generaly bearings don't like shocks. The contact areas between ball or roller and the tracks are very small. With rollers the contact area is larger. Wait and see after 10 000 miles.

I've always regarded a Morgan as my ultimate dream car and am now at the stage of being able to fulfil my dream and buy one.
I've recently test driven a 2017 Plus 4 and was not disappointed by the sublime view down the bonnet but unfortunately found the steering and the clutch to be really heavy. Is that usual?
Is the 4/4's clutch any lighter? My "old" 86 4/4 4 seater ( no power steering ) Is nice and light with a 15" motolita style steering wheel.just don't dry steer! Simple. Hydraulic clutch is heavy but not excessive. Can't comment on the 2017 model but 1986 is fine. The 4 / 4 is my dream car.....but alas I'm moving more modern ( german) due to health / injury issues  Good luck with your search

I loved My 1963 4/4 Series IV. Wish I had it back. The other day in Northern Oregon there was a 196? 4/4 pushing Me down the road. I was driving My +8 Bitsa. Very curvy road. 4/4 is very nimble.

Well everyone, I tried out a 4/4 yesterday and loved it. I found it to be a completely different driving experience and it totally restored my faith that a Morgan is still the car for me.
In fact I enjoyed it so much so that I'll be collecting the car next weekend and bringing it home.
Thanks for all your input and advice. I'm afraid I may ask many stupid questions in future!
