There is indeed an awful lot of 'wool pulling', most of it can be traced to research financed by the fossil fuel industry which is a massively powerful lobby that has a truly global reach.

When trying to evaluate claims, one has to always try to ensure that the same yardsticks are always applied. One of the most common with anti-EV arguments, for example, is to look at complete lifecycle emissions of the EV - mining materials for batteries, building the cars, generating the fuel and so on, whilst at the same time conveniently excluding parts of the equivalent lifecycle for ICE vehicles like exploration, drilling extraction, transport and so on of oil.

Most of the peer-reviewed material I have seen so far appear to agree that the best way to reduce environmental impact from vehicles is to keep individual vehicles for a long time and to use them sensibly. It's a lot better to amortise the total emissions from any vehicles over a 20 year lifespan than buying the latest model every 3 years.

But then of course you then run into not only the fossil lobby but also the VM lobby, another very powerful group. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs dependent on people consuming vehicles on a 2 year cycle.

Yep!

What you have to remember is that not only do you need a lot of electricity to operate an oil refinery, you also need a lot of water - and pumping water around is also a massive consumer of electricity. In the UK for example, the water industry uses something like 15% or more of the total UK electricity generation capacity.

If only we had access to a limitless supply of free and clean energy from a Fusion Reactor. It would have to be absolutely huge of course, in order to meet all our needs. And for safety's sake it would have to be sited a long way away from centres of population. Maybe someone could figure out a way of putting it up in the sky?

I agree about the influence of the oil industry Tim....it has a huge amount to lose as do a huge amount of people. I knew a retired scientist many years ago who had an invention crushed by the oil industry...he had a lot to say about them in those days!
Moving to a cleaner world which is not reliant on oil is going to cause problems with the oil producing countries.....interesting times ahead.

Dont really know but from looking in the built in garage, I reckon they will be thermalite blocks with stuck on insulation. All floors etc are sealed. The bungalow is a one off built by a surveyor for himself and using his subbies from work. Judging by the man and by all the fittings, it wasnt done on the cheap.

My guess is that the problem is a/ bungalow b/ size c/ bay windows with buttresses d/ narrow double glazing in mahogany frames

There is already a fusion reactor in the sky and it needs no pipes.

Not sure if Tim was being funny.

KIA have scored an own goal and priced the Niro higher than the Kona also only promising small numbers. With France Norway and Sweden being prioritised.

As for car manufacturing and carbon emissions new plants are being built that the whole cycle supposedly runs on renewable, that must mean they make every single last component and material that way in my books.

Howard, at work we have thermal imaging done in the latter stages of construction (& sometimes air leakage testing) it can be surprising where it shows up faults

I wish. We have a 1990 3 bed bungalow with decent insulation and the annual cost is north of £2k with the thermostat set at 19.5C. And a log burner used a bit. [/quote]

Howard, our bungalow (1700 sq ft) uses £1800 of electricity. We have ASHP heating, plus like you a log burner. It was built in mid 70’s and extended 2016. The single biggest thermal improvement was the loft insulation. Cost £650 for additional 250mm on top of original 100mm. We had lived here for a couple of years before installing insulation and immediately saw the heating cost drop at least 10-15%. More recently we have installed a MVHR ventilation system so hoping for a bit more saving. Not so cost effective I know but should help.
