I bought just a thicknesser, but I suspect it equally applies.... In my experience do not go for a clarke from machine mart. I thought I was saving a few quid but it was so out of alignment I could not adjust it to get it square.
I went for a jet. spare parts are expensive though... I snapped the drive belt and found that out. Then I found a local firm who matched it to a local manufacturer's version that was a fiver.

I have never had a problem with any Clarke product, and believe me, there are quite a few red machines in my workshop.

I have Clarke stuff for other things and I too had never had an issue. But on the thicknesser the frame for the feed rollers was really distorted - so much that I could not adjust the rollers to compensate. I took it back to the shop, checked it against another which was just as bad, and they agreed to a full refund.
I have used the Jet extensively now and it has been really good. Apart from a cock-up from me where a long length of timber hit the back of my shed, jammed the machine, and snapped the drive belt!!

I've got a Scheppach HMS260 that I picked up (nearly new) on eBay for around £300. On the whole, I've found it to be easy to use, very reliable and capable of producing very fine results. As with all such tools however, it does benefit from careful use because the blades can be easily be damaged by imprudent use of unsuitable timber. Obviously the blades can be changed but it's a bit of a faff. You'll also need a good dust/chip extractor of course!

The Makita thicknesser is superb, but it doesn’t do over the top planning.
Mine did miles of larch planks when I lined the garage.

Good point from Andy. Get a dust extractor. I have a record one and use it with the lathe, bandsaw and router table. Makes life so much better
