I had twin outlet side exhausts from Infinity - good quality and a hell of a lot cheaper than Librands. The quality was tested when I lost the rear wheel and they acted as skis!!!

I have the quad pipe, rear exit Librands system fitted on my Series 1 Aero.

I had smaller S/S side boxes (under the running boards) made up locally as the older, larger ones caught on e.g. speed humps, etc.

These have cured the 'grounding' problem and as a bonus, have produced a deeper 'growl' to the soundtrack and may have added a little oomph to the performance smile

I also designed and fitted an aluminium, powder coated diffuser to the rear to fill in that (to my eyes innocent ) odd gap -

(Apologies to those that have seen this photo before !)

James, I like the diffuser, been thinking about similar for my s3, it's got sidepipes, and a gaping hole at the back, is it just screwed to the underside?

thanks Gareth (and Em !) thumbs

Yes, a couple of coach screws at the rear into the ash frame and a couple of S/S bolts with washers/locknuts through two drilled holes in the boot floor.

I believe that later Aeros have the petrol tank in the way of the boot floor but I was OK on a Series 1.....

I had some twin side pipes fitted to my S1 last year. They look & sound great, very much like a C63 AMG merc, thunderous at revs and yet restrained when below 2000 rpm when cruising. Fitted by Hayward and Scott. Interesting was the incredible weight of the old silencers when removed (2 per side) , which I have kept. 40 to 50 kg per side, so some considerable weight saving, but I don't know how much the new single silencers per side weigh. My estimate is an overall 50 to 60 kg saving

Don't forget that the changes may adjust back pressure and tune. I have always used the rule that a significant adjustment to the exhaust should be linked with a rolling road ECU map to optimise them.

I have a plan to tune the engine in our family car now it is out of warranty but plan to change the exhaust first and then put it through a map change.

If you are looking for a custom exhaust fabricator give these guys a call and ask for the name of nearby company they use ? www.mslperformance.co.uk (assumes you maybe be near Brum)

Interesting if they all had the same exhaust then, my standard exhaust didn't seem to weigh very much at all..

Interesting that you say that. For about 100 miles after fitting the sides pipes my S1 was feeling a little off colour. However, after some intentional stop/starts within those 100 miles, the ECU seemed to relearn the new relocated exhaust sensor inputs and settled down to normal. Car did however seem a bit more lively but I honestly don't know how subjective that is
