I served my time at Rootes in Linwood as a draughtsman.
You can't just leave it there, man, tell us more!
Nothing much to tell, really. I started in 1966 when it was Rootes Group and went through the change to Chrysler in 1967.
The thing I remember most was that being left-handed, I had difficulty with the boards as the swinging arm was designed for right-handers. All apprentices went through an engineering workshop which included lathes, mills and grinders. The guy in charge had a favourite punishment for misbehavers which was to manually hacksaw through a 3" steel bar.
I changed to Production Engineering after about one year but never really enjoyed the work.
Went to what was Paisley Tech (Now University of West Scotland!)for ONC sandwich course, duly passed. Went onto HND which I never completed.
Left Scotland in 1972 and joined BR as a signalling installer and journeyed through various different depots, ending up at Derby as a Signalling Instructor in the ivory tower that is now the Derby Conference Centre. That is instructing the back-room boys who fault-find and maintain the signals, not signallers.
