Hello all,

Has somebody fitted daytime driving lights to a trad? I think about fitting fog lamps converted to LED on my 4/4. Bad idea?

Cheers Frank

I have noticed recently lots of newish Audi's, Mercedes and other very expensive cars with long white wavy daytime driving lights.
They curve and weave along the front lower part of the front wings and all in LED.
Is this a trend?
What is fitted to these cars one year are generally fitted to most the following year or year after?
Is Morgan going to fit them to its newest model? and the new 3 wheeler and maybe even to the pedal car.
Now that would look awesome.
woohoo

I can say that LED technology is definately the future for automotive lighting and it is very likely that mainstream manufacturers will be bringing cars to the market with LED headlights (main and dipped beam) in the near future, as costs for LED modules lower to an acceptable price.
Light emmission for LED's is already up to the level of HID lighting and appart from durability and efficiency, the other significant feature for LED is that they can be dimmed easily. This could offer a degree of lighting control that we have not taken advantage of yet in automotive design. For example, headlights can become side lights at the flick of a switch, through dimming etc...

One thing we are very likely to see is the demise of the traditional 'headlight' as we see lighting 'styled' into the whole frontal area of the vehicle.....wavy lines of LED lights are here to stay (for a while at least).

Dear 1560,

It will not be long until we all have to drive with lights on day and night. Ständard headlight bulbs will then not live long. Changing them on my 4/4 is no pleasure at all - and there are LED's where you don't see much difference to classic bulbs. The christmas tree LED's on modern cars like Audi are awful.

Another plus for us with older cars is that LED's don't suck too much on dynamos and batteries.

Frank,

why not use the little lamp on the fender as a "daylight driving lamp"

you really scared me,
I really don't want mine with such a "line" (strip) of LED

concerning "law"
I really hope trads won't look like those Indian/Filipin bling-mobiles, nor those fake Chinese old-mobiles

concerning swapping bulbs with LED's: i think somenone tried
but you have to change the voltage or something like that

grtz,
steven

Voltage droppers are built into the LED 'bulb' base Stephen.

How long have we all been looking at Volvo's DRLs, since some time in the 70s?

It was going to come sooner or later, whether there will be a requirement for retro-fit is a good qustion. I modified the front parking light on my BMW R100RT (1982 vintage) to run a 20W lamp as a DRL in the fairing, many years ago. Whether it helped is anyone's guess. When it does become law, those without DRL will be even more hidden while out on the road...

As for the current Audi DRL sick2 B. awful.

Cheers,

One Trad Morgan owner I know was planning to convert his front wing lamps to LED Driving Lights this year. Someone cost saving at Morgan decided to eliminate the wing lamps from all our later than 2009 cars banghead .

There are previous post on converting to LEDs - driving a dark green trad down sunken lanes a lot of the time, I always run on side lights and converted as many lamps as I could on the car to LEDs.

Less drain, brighter and more robust. Slightly blueish tinge on the four front side lights as others here may remember, only problem was that part of the wing light seems to have been made out of cardboard! Disintegrated when damp anyway, blowing the fuse and I think was the time that ALL the lights failed. Not entertaining. Now have the two add-on spots wired up on a separate circuit, just in case.
