Just watching the devastation and loss of life in the California bush fires on TV. I trust all our TM and Morganeer friends in the area are safe.
The bush fire season has already started in this part of the world as we move into summer and I am very aware how catastrophic these events are.
Stay safe....

I share your concern for the people in California, I suspect the death toll will only rise over the next few days.. Let's hope you guys remain safe in Oz.
All the best.

An old friend in Westlake village near thousand oaks has just written to me " Yes real close we had to evacuate Thursday night but got back Friday morning to find that the fires had missed us. Xyz is still waiting to see if his house survived. Between the fires and a mass shooting in town it’s getting scary around here! Thanks for checking on us."

We have a lot to be thankful for even if we don't appreciate the rain here in the Southwest.
Lets hope the fire will subside soon with no further loss of life for humans and the animals.

These fires are horrifying. The nearest one is about 150 miles away and still the air has been thick with smoke for days and ash blankets our cars every morning. The sun has been eerily beautiful, a bright orange glowing through the smoke. Last year I experienced this same surreal eeriness in the air, however the fire came within 6 miles of me. Considering the distance, this one must be huge. In fact, rumor has it that it will surpass last year's fire as the worst fire disaster in California history. I have lived in this state for 50 years. This is not normal. The past 2 years have seen such an increase in fires here that earthquakes are low on the list of top fears, and I was on the Bay Bridge 6 minutes before it collapsed back in 1989. Countless families are instantly homeless, their childrens' schools and their own businesses have disappeared overnight. They are camping along the side of the road in tents, their RVs and vehicles burned up. Over 100 people are still missing just from the one fire nearest me. Southern California similarly afflicted. My current housemate was displaced by last year's fires, which is how I came to share my home at all. She's from Texas and she is a great cook, so it worked out well. My heart is breaking for everyone who suddenly had their whole life plan disappear overnight. This clip has overly dramatic narration but does give an idea of what is going on in just one of the many fires going on at this moment. Local News Coverage of Fires

Having visited the Malibu area , Santa Monica & LA doing route 66 in 2017 I can imagine how difficult these fires are to fight.
The narrow valleys & steep hills must funnel the fires.
Lets hope everyone stays safe, losing your home is bad but it can be replaced.

Wild nature at its worst...assisted by man in a number of ways.
Yes, climate change is real, weather patterns that have been relatively stable for a hundred years are altering. But that is not the full story.
The natural ecology of that part of the west coast is for lightning to cause brush fires, so every few years the undergrowth is burnt, in some cases certain tree seeds cannot germinate without a "toasting". So regular controlled burns are essential if the forest is to be properly managed.
Setting up communities in and amongst trees was, I feel, asking for trouble. This is made worse by the "ecomentalists" stopping the Forest Service from carrying out controlled burns, because it kills small animals and makes a mess of the woodland. So, when a fire does start there is so much combustable material that it is soon out of control.
I feel for everyone who has had their life destroyed by these fires, but the solution is not simply to re-build. The people responsible for local building regulations have to look at the wider picture and think about to make the re-built community fire resistant. This may include different building materials, felling trees within a certain distance of houses, and regular clearance of the underbrush so that the fires stop a good distance away.

Local News Coverage of Fires Thanks for that first hand account Tcherek, that footage is terrifying the fear those people must be feeling is palpable.
