Thinking about having electric gates fitted - there doesn’t seem to be any easily accessible ball park price guides, perhaps because they are largely bespoke, but was still a bit surprised when a quote came in at circa £7.5k fitted for wood and metal design approx three metres with intercom.

Anyone fitted them and wished they had stuck with manual? Or are they worth it?

Definitely worth it.... I've had gates installed on two different properties over the years. One set wrought iron and the current set which are solid wood.

The other thing worth considering is a SIM controlled keypad. The keypad phones the house and then if no answer it rings your mobile. It means you can answer the gates from anywhere and open them if necessary. Possibly very slightly cheaper than having an intercom wired in.

Very good for deterring any 'casual' callers.

ETA - please do feel free to PM me if you want to ask anything about them. smile

Crime/nuisance callers/security make gates mandatory - whether you are in or not.
There is usually a good gate maintenance man locally - our iron gate hinges/electrics/motors are serviced every eighteen months and used daily via handsets we keep in cars and house.

Yes it will cost four figures - but a good long term investment.

We have electric gate, much prefer it to manual. The gate is secured shut by an electromagnetic lock, which is extremely secure as long as the power is on.

How we are set up means we have one big gate (width wise) and the first gate fitted was wooden.

However we had a lot of reliability problems as the sheer weight of the gate caused hinge problems and motor strain. We got it changed for wrought iron gate, which, although you can see through it, has given no problems in 10 + years.

We have an annual maintenance contract on the gate which also gives 24/7 call out in case of problems.

Overall I’m a big fan of them..

£7.5k sounds a bit steep. I did my own on a 5 bar 3m wooden gate and in-ground actuator for £950. It can be opened using a text message from registered users or the usual remote control.

Your price is high, but I don't know the spec.. and I am out of touch with current pricing.
Ive installed some in my long gone working life, buy the components from a supplier, match to gate of your requirements, and get the local builder or a good handy man to install. Defiantly worth getting another couple of quotes though.
