A few words of advice for all the 3.7 Roadster owners out there:

Check to see if the bottom hose is being fouled by one of the inner-wing to crosshead mounting bolts and the front brake pipe. I’d got mine up on axle stands and was giving it a bit of a once-over and noticed the bottom hose was catching on the N/S/F brake pipe, so I carefully bent the brake pipe out of the way, but then noticed the hose was caught on a protruding bolt a wee bit higher up which looked far more serious.

It was, too, because as I pulled the hose to one side it was caught fast on a protruding bolt which had very very nearly worn all the way through the hose. I’m sure that if I’d driven much more than a few more miles then the hose would have been punctured completely, leaving me in a bit of a pickle. And a puddle.

You should be able to see from above if the hose is catching on the bolt, but you’ll need to get under the car to check on the brake pipe. Then while you’re down there, also check to see if a brake pipe is fouling the brake servo vacuum hose, as mine was. Although it would have taken some time for the vacuum hose to wear through, it was well on its way so I’m glad I checked.

There are several other points where there is potential for the brake pipes to be fouled, so it’s worth just following each pipe run to see if there’s any poorly-routed sections that can be lifted slightly away from any areas where rubbing could occur, as it could save a lot of grief later.

Have fun…

Well spotted Sid,

Had a similar problem on my 4/4 where the bottom hose passed through the cross head.

It was chafing and would eventually have gone through.

Has your car been modified or did it leave the factory like that?

Hi Bob,

Sad to say it left the factory like that. Maybe the 'craftsmen' were on toilet breaks at the time and left it to the lads on work experience to bolt it all together!

Chafing is an issue on most Morgans, and as Sid has said, check it all out.

Well spotted , serious issue this , everyone needs to have a very careful look for any nasty trapped pipes and plastic/rubber/silicone pipes onto sharp metal , another job to do in the garage !

In 2014 my 3.7 roadster which was less than 2 year old lost its coolant on the M6 due to same problem.

Checked my 2018 Roadster and bottom hose has been re-routed compared with earlier versions. It does appear to rest on the offside steering rack clamp with MMC aware as they fitted a neoprene pad to top of this clamp. Although a tight fit to hose no damage seen.

Richard, thanks for the heads up, I must check mine this weekend, when I hope to finish off my cross member covers too
