The great escape (from bad weather)

Just before Christmas I got tired of the snowy weather and felt I needed a break. A quick plan was sketched to escape from winter frustration: Driving down to the South of Spain in the Morgan, hood down.
The only two fixed points in the planning were the desire to visit the Alhambra in Granada and an invitation for the "Space of Sound" Festival in Madrid. A friend from Germany didn’t needed much convincing to join in and finally arrived early morning on the 26th. We left Zurich around lunchtime.

They say a picture tells more than a 1.000 words. We’ve taken almost 2.000 photos and are still running out of words to describe the joy. I hope you'll like our selection of images (and the little textual extra information).

The admiration for Morgan is generally known to be universal – but the Spaniards have taken it to a totally different level. They got so carried away with enthusiasm that giving thumbs-up was just the least expression of joy.

Nonetheless the car was towed in Granada, but quickly released after the fine of just EUR 90,-- was settled. Others were not so lucky - note the SLR on the compound of the police.

Our visit at the official Morgan dealer in Madrid was dissatisfactory. They’re keeping two green Trads locked away in a dark and uninspiring showroom. The salesperson hardly found it worth noting that we arrived in a Morgan. No wonder they sell far less than 20 cars even in a good year.

Luckily we found someone else in the Motor trade wearing the Morgan name with pride. Those guys had two objects of exposition, despite none of them being a Morgan.

The Plus 4 performed fabulous and finally brought us home safely, never missing a beat.

We bought two leather jackets, 9 shirts, 2 pullovers and 3 pair of shoes - and still managed to squeeze everything into the car. Towards the end of our trip more and more dirty clothes had to be stored away in bags underneath the rear panel – squeezed between the fuel tank and inside the spare wheel, securely held with the central screw holding the spare in place.

I strongly recommend the coastal road between Tossa del Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols. Our memorable drive can partly be found on youtube:

Great story and photographs, I will add this to my list of things to do before I die.
Always nice to hear of more admiration for classic cars, especially the Morgan mark.

Hi Marian,

I just watched your video on youtube. Nice road. It would have been interesting to drive the same road uphill. Did you do it? Another interesting trip would be the Stelvio, don't you think?

Happy New year to you and your Morgan.

Yves cheers

Thank you guys for sharing our enthusiasm and for sending all those pleasant words.

I'd like to reply to Yves question why we didn't went "uphill". Well, the road runs along the steep coast. On its total lenght the road is almost level - although it appears in the video that we went more down than up.

Maybe I'll upload the video of our drive in the opposite direction.
I felt a little reserved putting this on youtube, because its lacking the dose of "political correctness" that is required these days.

It involves far more drifting and more radical overtaking manoeuvres.
And we were giggling all along the way, sometimes even bursting in boisterous laughter when yet another driver imprecated us.

I like your combination and i think about a similar order for the plus 4 that is in my mind. Is your Hood Black, or dark brown ?

Great post and great video. The car looks good in any setting and the video of the mountain/ coast roads makes me want to be there. Thanks for posting. Excellent.
