I reckon shooting a drone down with an air rifle should be entirely permissible where personal privacy or public safety is compromised.

Regrettably shooting at a drone would amount to criminal damage at the moment, even if it was spying on you. You would also have to be conscious of the pellet leaving the curtilage of your property which can be a crime.

I might have a go with my catapult however!

Aberporth base in West Wales is drone research centre. I think mainly military use but not sure.
They are potentially a good thing if used properly. Our local police were starting to look at them to reduce expensive helicopter deployment. Why send a helicopter to photograph an RTC scene when a drone could be deployed from the scene? Big ££££ saving. Also a less obvious spy in the sky for critical scenes ( hostage, siege etc).
We were being updated re this and one key factor was licensing the controller to go out of line of sight. There is a regulation of staying within sight/ distance limits and homing ability due to battery drain.

Maybe Gatwick will consider it now, maybe others will learn from their experience and do likewise. There again maybe not.

My assumption was that while they allowed the disruption to continue they at least had a chance to catch the perpetrator?

Like Alistair I have seen both Dedrone and many other similar technologies. Without using such technologies the police can only really look for someone operating the drone either by remote or mobile phone. The odds on them getting lucky are slim as indicated by the length of time Gatwick has been closed.
No one wants to spend money on technology until something like this happens and then someone higher up the food chain looks at the media coverage and the financial losses then asks why they don’t already have it.

I think Aberporth develop the big drones that are used to drop a few surprise packages on the bad guys.

It is thought they are actually remotely flown from an airbase in East Anglia although based in the war zones - it's the nature of war unfortunately innocents will die from time immemorial.
We will never learn.

Rich,
Not guilty. Although our garden is large, I don't think it qualifies as an airbase besides it would scare the deer!!

When the first crash and ensuing loss of life occurs they will begin to take effective measures but until that time the rhetoric will continue.
