Why - BALPA outlined these as a danger at least 5 years ago and it's his business to provide solutions.

There are several other angles yet to be shown which are more disturbing.

First we need to seperate little drones from the big UAV military ones. The greater worry is the weaponisation of the small cheap commercial drones which is what is being discussed here I think. If someone has got The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper then we have a bigger issue.

Swarming drones or using a large group of them at the same time is a new tactic that has been discussed. Sending 50+ at a time with small explosive charges to overwhelm the defences ability to deal with so many of them. Even the close-in computerised defence weapons would find this a problem.

You do not need to communicate with the drone when it is off and running. You can simply program in a dozen GPS based way points and let it go. With batteries improving all the time this gives you a 30 minute one way run at a target. It also makes it a fire-and-forget weapon so the owner can eject it and run away.

There have already a number of attacks in this form, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caracas_drone_attack

Well maybe he needs to start taking some of the calls that have been trying to get through to him for the last two years! I bet his bill for the disruption this week would have more than paid for it.

I do laugh when I see the entitled crowd on TV blaming the airlines for this and demanding compensation.

Drones offer a cheap and effective way to cause disruption and also carry small quantities of payload. Already in use to smuggle items into prisons.
Some recent terror attacks have used ordinary vehicles without explosives.
Putting the two together seems a logical step to me. Why not use a simple, hard to stop method rather than an elaborate plan with a suicide bomber?
Besides terrorism, disruption is a tactic used by protest groups.
I was tuned in to R2 this week and Jeremy Vine was on. I was about to retune when I caught the conversation. An eco activist was discussing the Gatwick incident and making strong comments about the pollution caused by aircraft. I sensed his leaning towards condoning the drones as a protest method. His voice tone was drifting into excited agitation a lot with a very undertone of increasing the actions to “change the thoughts re global warming” for the whole population. Quite major changes being proposed re reducing air activity, even hinting at banning it. He highlighted the cheap air travel companies as unnecessary , costs being way below equivalent alternative travel methods.
I can see a focus on drones starting with tighter legislation re sales and licensing. What was a fun toy has now started to be a threat.

The vast majority of drone owners are law abiding and stick to the rules. I have a drone, I stick within the rules and never have an issue. They are great fun if used properly.

It seems that this couple have bypassed the drones Geo fence ( easy enough if you know what your doing ) and for reasons that are not yet clear have disrupted 1000s of people xmas plans.

Legislation wont stop the idiots that push it.

These two morons should have the book thrown at them and be given 10 years in chokey. That should be enough to deter other s ??

Same with mobile phone use in cars. 1k fine 6 months ban and re-test. No if's no buts. It would soon stop people on their phones.

Current penalties for people that risk other peoples lives are too soft IMO
