Interesting fact- One of the larger engine plants was the Ford motor company run shadow factory in Manchester, it was built near the ship canal starting may 1940 at cost of £7m , finished in 1941 reaching its target of 400 Merlin engines per month in 1942 based on 2 shift working . It reached 900 Merlins per month by 1944.

That was some heavy investment in those days.

That was some heavy investment in those days. 'Britains War Machine' David Edgerton , very interesting read , basically saying that we were out producing the Germans and even the US for most of WW2 in nearly every machine , very positive book !

I live less than one mile from Duxford. A whole range of WW11 aircraft fly most days. There was a spit up this afternoon. On final approach I can often see the pilot's face. Love it.

You are a lucky boy, our No1 daughter and family live in Great Cambourne and when we are visiting I grab a day around there, their Warbirds days are great and have caught a couple of them. Father was a Spit pilot so that sound and smell is a very emotive thing for me as he flew off into the far horizon several years ago now.

I was lucky enough to fly in a Spit last year and take the controls at one point. Funnily enough I was talking to my wife about it today and we agreed I can do it again because the whole experience was so overwhelming, I kind of feel I didn't get the best out of it. Next time....I will know what to expect.
The noise, the smell - something that will live with me.
