Well Calum, that's how we visit the East Coast of Yorkshire. We arrive by 0800, have a bit of breakfast and set off home for a late lunch. Empty roads most of the way with a five o'clock start!

This sounds great but I have just found it in Scenic Tours book so I expect the best hotels are all pre booked.
Here for a good time not a long time!!

Thank you for all the replies, is it better to pre-book hotels or chance it because I might see somewhere I want to stay for longer, pre-booking does not give any flexibility .

The best place in which I stayed when I did it a couple of years ago was Mackay's Rooms in Durness. Good rooms, superb breakfast and service and only a few yards away the views are fantastic.

Suggestions of heavy policing are a put off. It's "heavy policing" by Scottish terms, Howard - in other words you might see a speed camera or a patrol once in a blue moon. The report I read (in The Times Driving section) suggested that they were there more to keep the boy racers in check and pick up the pieces - much like the EVO triangle. But for heavens sake don't let that put you off going to Scotland, there are literally hundreds of miles of twisty B road delights that await. All well and good but I am a boy racer.  Albeit an old bald one, but a speed freak nevertheless.

All well and good but I am a boy racer. Albeit an old bald one, but a speed freak nevertheless. Steer clear of the NC500 route then. There are plenty of B roads that will test your driving skills to their limit and you'll not need to worry about getting nicked for speeding as they are NSL and you'd need to be an absolute driving god to navigate them at those kind of speeds. If you just like going fast then autobahns or track days are probably more suited to your skills.

Those B roads and some A roads are brilliant. Narrow twisty, undulating, with loose surfaces....just perfect for a Plus 4, as I found on both our recent trips.
The Roadster would have too much power to enjoy the thrill, but the Plus 4 is just right...................as I found following that Aston Martin over the Grampians......haha!

I would pre-book. Up there the places to stay are few and far between, so you may end up sleeping in the car!!!!! We did around 100 miles a day. Early breakfast, leave by 0930, arrive for a late lunch then explore the new place. And repeat......And repeat.........

I’ve been lots to of times and yet to see a Bobbie car, just don’t speed in villages and towns, or even past roadside settlements and you won’t annoy anyone.

Yep, pre-book is a must. When we went, some knobheads in Porkers were racing around, overtook us, one of them spun, demolished a tree and totalled his porker. Ruined the run for not just him, but all his mates too. They are not roads to race around.
