I think listening to the radio this morning The D of E has admitted being blinded by the low Winter Sun and pulled out from a narrow private country lane onto a busy road and onto an oncoming car

My dad has to wear tinted overspecs and now finds the suns glare problematic

He should have been driving a Volvo. My new XC40’s safety systems would not let me pull out in front of an on coming car, sun or no sun.

My farther drove well into his nineties and kind of phased himself out, initially for longer journeys he’d either get the train or myself to take him, then he phased out going through town but was lucky enough to have a close relative next door who took him shopping. He cherished the car just to drive down a very steep hill from his house and go was a walk on the flat but have the car to come back up the hill. He was very reluctant to give up completely and it was when his little car wouldn’t make another MOT that he stopped. I can understand anyone’s reluctance to stop but hope I have enough sense to stop when I am no longer fit or able.

I am now 60 years old and I strongly vote for compulsory driving skill testing every year as soon people get retired. I know this my be against my personal interest in 10years time but it was against my personal interest to wait for a driving license until I got 18.

I know this could be some kind of self protection because also in the years to come I will rate myself an excellent driver.

Strange.....the car he hit was approaching from an easterly direction and the sun was low in the west!

It must be very difficult to make that decision to give up driving particularly if you’ve loved it all your life. He’s lucky that he could keep driving on the royal estates if he still needs his kicks.

Its nuts driving when you are nearly hundred, but at the other end of the scale, I have been driving past a nearby lamp post with dozens of bunches of flowers tied to it.

You know whats coming - reading the local weekly paper today and four teenagers in a car lost control and a sixteen year old girl is dead.

Actually according to tonight’s news, the D of E was turning at a T junction from a normal road not a private lane end but they did mention being dazzled by low sun again
