Its a practical issue. Yes the risks must rise a bit as you get to your later years though the stats dont back that up from what I have seen. The biggest issue is the availability of alternatives. Where I live we have no bus service and in any case how would you cope with the Tesco shop on a bus? I suppose the answer is delivery but that doesnt get you out of the house and there are other issues anyway - like getting rubbish down to the dumpit site 20 miles away.
Move house you say? But even at my current 73, the idea of the upheaval that involves fills me with horror. particulalry if it means moving near the kids and getting fathered by my son. He has had that tendency for the last 20 years as is.

A friend of mine in Cornwall is probably the last person who drove traction engines for a living. He is well into his 90’s. A couple of years ago he took the advanced driving test (or whatever it’s called) and passed easily.
“Why did you do that Jim?”
“So that if some bu**er drives in to me they can’t say I’m not fit to be on the road”

A few years ago we had an old boy who daily drove a round trip of 40 miles to visit his wife in a nursing home. One day he was involved in a minor RTC and had his licence revoked until test passed, he did pass the test a few months later....his age 100 yrs. It's about ability not age, part of my role is assessing elderly drivers as to Fitness to drive, incidentally I am approaching 75 yrs and still hold Response and Pursuit permits.

Good for him. I did the advanced test on my bike early in the millenium. I very much doubt that I would pass it now.

We have just persuaded my MIL to sell her car and give up at 92 years of age. Sadly it was 20years overdue, she was terrible. As soon as she agreed to stop my brother in law phoned We Buy any Car and took her car down before she changed her mind. I do feel a little sorry for her as it is a bit of independence that you know will never return but I also know it was the right thing to do.
I dread to think of the day when it will be my turn having been a petrol head all my life especially as it seems to be getting closer at an increasingly rapid rate. In Nov last year I developed "Septuagenarianism" and it is irreversible !.

I feel the idea for a new company, perhaps I should approach JP Motorsports. The cotton top track day company.

I guess this is an upside of automated cars. By the time I need to give up, hopefully they will be properly developed and in use so that I can still maintain my freedom.
