I loved the smell of Wrights Coal Tar Soap.
I spent an "Interesting" 6 months at Coalite chemicals in Bolsover in early 1990. Everywhere stank of TCP and other chemicals distilled out of the tar that came from the Coalite smokeless fuel production. The plant also enjoyed a mini-Seveso incident in 1968, but for whatever reason it never attracted the same publicity as the one in Italy in 1976. In both cases the surrounding area was contaminated with Dioxins.

You can still buy the soap, but the smell is a fragrance, not real coal tar.
Coal tar is toxic, possibly carcinogenic and incredibly long lasting.
It also kills all known germs, dead. Also most invertebrates and in water all fish.

Peter, I drove past that site on the way to work and back from 1989 to 2001 on my way to Ashover

It's been sold for a huge housing development & they are about 4 or 5 years into the decontam (they call it site remediation now), I remember the huge settling lakes of yuck and would certainly not live in a house built there

Street View, July 2018, shows that all the buildings are down, but from above the site is much as it was!

A google search suggests that nothing much has happened since the end of 2017. I suspect the full horror of the deep seated pollution was found to be far worse than anticipated, way beyond the £7.8m allocated.

I was in Bristol last Friday, and popped into the Cornhill market as there's a speciality chili sauce stall there.

They have loads of different sauces there, graded by order of ferocity with normal stuff like Sriracha or Encona Tabasco down at the mild/medium scale, rated at 5 or 6. As you get hotter the names of the sauces also get more and more lurid.

I settled for a strength 10 'Psycho Juice' consisting of 70% Habanero, but my pal went for a bottle of strength 12 stuff labelled 'Rectal Rampage'!

scared exting

In my first job we would moan about the partners being cheapskates and one of the things we resented was the Izal toilet paper. But one of my colleagues dissented and said he preferred Izal because 'your fingers go through the ordinary toilet paper'. I still bear the mental scars from that revelation! sick2
