Never bother with winter tyres and never seen the need to either. OK I am retired and it might be different were I still working, but the family Merc shopping trolley manages fine in all conditions but roads that are white all over, and those are maybe 1 day per year here in sub stropical south wales.

If they are completely white, then we dont go out and TBH thats more about living at the top of a hill with a 90 degree right in front of someones house at the bottom of the hill. Dont want to park in their front room.

I suppose our tyres could be winter ones or maybe summer ones or maybe just tyres.

A few years ago we were booked into a posh hotel in Derbyshire in January. The forecast was heavy snow. We went in SiL's SEAT which had snow tyres.

We had a lovely evening watching the snow fall through an ancient leaded bay window next to a roaring log fire. It was enchanting. The stuff of Christmas Cards........

We set off back to SiL's, about twenty miles. The roads were white over with several inches of snow. That FWD SEAT performed flawlessly. It stuck to the road. We came up behind a group of Land Rover fans out green laning, and we kept up easily.

It was the most impressive demonstration of snow tyres I've seen.

Do I use snow tyres? No.

When I used to take part in some winter classic rallies (Monte Carlo etc), some of the experienced teams used to run their directional vredestein winter tyres the wrong way , apparently they stop betters.

Dave I have never gone to the bother of getting snow tyres and changing them every season and I have got by the legal requirement in this zone by carrying chains during the winter season.

When I first started to hear of the new technology that was allowing the manufacture of snow certified tyres that you could use all year round I started to investigate what was available. Jochen (numog) had decided to fit these tyres to his Roadster and I followed suit on the Plus 4, we then ordered them from new on the Polo. I would not suggest that they are ideal for a track day car but for fast touring they excellent.

The logic is; if you can have a good tyre at a reasonable price that is going to give you an added degree of security in winter why not go for it.

There may be other tyres in this class but I am only aware of the Michelin CrossClimate and the Nokian Weatherproof (which performs poorly in summer) that are actually certified for snow (important in Italy) but there may be others.

Yes, the development of 'all season' tyre technology was what interested me as I understood that these cross climate tyres also performed better than what could now be described as summer tyres in cooler, wetter conditions particularly if the temperature drops below about 5 or 6 degrees. I don't really want to venture out in snow so wouldn't consider purely winter tyres.
Maybe there is a bit of sales hype surrounding this new breed of tyre but it seems to me that they have added advantages and not many disadvantages, particular if one likes driving the Morgan all year, which I do.
