I feel guilty... 10,000+ trouble free miles. Luck of the draw?

My 16 month old Euro 3 M3W (one of the last ones out of Malvern before the Euro 4s came on stream) has only 9000 miles on the clock. To date the following has been required on the car:

1. O ring fitted to bevel box - it was missing from new
2. Rusting bright pack cowl replaced
3. Badly scratched new exhaust replaced
4. Drive sprocket replaced (belt retaining flange coming off)
5. Cambelt tensioner pulley broke (French autoroute recovery)
6. Paintwork blistering around indicator stalks and rollover hoops
7. New wheelhub fitted (supersession part which increases gap between drive belt and tyre by about 4mm)
8. Petrol pump failure?? (as I write car is on recovery vehicle to garage after losing all power at busy junction: awaiting my diagnosis to be confirmed)

My head screams "Sell and run", but my heart still smiles everytime I get the goggles out, flick the cover, push the button and feel this unique contraption come to life!

What to do???!!!

Have you checked the chassis and wishbone for cracks. There is plenty on this forum covering the issue......

Have the car thoroughly checked by someone who knows what to look for BEFORE your warranty expires then make a decision.

Keep it. Trust me, I had my fair share of "rage" moments. But this contraption bewitches us.

Morning Bwana,( Nick)
I think you have your answers. If you have driven the beast 9,000 miles already you must enjoy it ! You were in my group at last years Albert Ball trip to Northern France when Geoff had a sudden breakdown in his M3W. You saw how quickly everyone pulled together, diagnosed the probable fault then advised Geoff of the best course of action. A few hours later due to the help of Roger G who had a spare fuel pump he was back on the road. As a long term, long distance driver of Vintage Morgan Three Wheelers I am proud to be an owner/driver of both old and also now a 2012 M3W.The M3W took us safely to Norway and back in 2018 and never missed a beat. Being a long term Vintage Morgan owner it is a habit to carry spares, the M3W is no different. I carry the parts that I know can be replaced fairly easily. I may never need them.
DON'T SELL.
Ian

Yep, That's some list and even though mine is longer, yours has some things that mine does not have. I have days left on my warranty and just advised them of rippling paint on a mud guard.
Luckily I live close to the factory, but would argue that most of the 5k I have done since 2016 has been to them or the dealership for warranty issues. To be fare they have all been sorted and I have just spent a weekend away, with 4 hours each way, and not an engine beat out of place.
Will I still be smiling when the warranty has gone!!

If you were referring to shares in Morgan Car Co then I think the answer would be YES! The costs of aftercare / warranty support must be eye-watering! wink

MMC had its most profitable year last year and has prepped for BREXIT as best it can so I think the future looks OK or as best as it could be. I agree with Ian's comments above, many M3W owners have newly entered the world of Morgan ownership, its a lifestyle not suited to everyone but to those who are suited you never give it up.

I have this theory that MMC, whilst doing their best to improve the M3W itself, don't actually feel too bad about selling a vehcile that isn't of merchantable quality in many cases. I have lost count of the 4/4 and +4 owners I've met, who started their Morgan life in a Three Wheeler, but sold because of the unreliability. So, it is just a stepping stone, a bit like drugs, something soft and interesting to get us all hooked, then onto the hard (and expensive) gear in due course, and of course, once hooked there is no way out. We are committed for life.

THANK YOU ALL!
This is the closest I've ever been to "group therapy" and it works!
I note that not one person commended "sell"....
I will keep the car! (I knew I would!)

On reflection, as an ex-biker the M3W fills a void. My first M3W was a 2013 model which I kept for 4000 miles and 3 months before breakdowns got me down and I traded it in for a 2015 Plus 4. This I kept for 6 months in 2017 and put 7000 miles on it: but it wasn't for me: although much more reliable than my M3W, it didn't make me smile as much and driving it over speed humps - ever so slowly - always sounded as if you were ripping out the bottom of an ocean liner.

Whilst my real gripe is that a vehicle (M3W) that now costs £40k ono should be much more reliable, I realise eccentricity (or is it collective madness?) comes at a price.

Not many MDs of car companies respond to emails. To his credit, Steve Morris at MMC replied the same day when I fired off this moan to him. So whilst MMC and my dealer sort out a new petrol pump, I find myself missing my M3W as the sun shines on near-empty coastal roads here in Cornwall.

Once again, thanks everyone for your comments which have helped in this moment of weakness!
