Did you use the plate to secure the cooler? Mine is flimsy aluminum and I would worry about the plate only being secured by two 6mm machine screws. Or do you have it anchored to the cross tube under the engine?

One of the reasons I originally did not go further forward with the lower shelf/plate is the amount of leverage as the it lengthens. I had thought if I used the shelf higher and further forward I would fabricate a third attachment to the shelf to attach to the cross tube under the engine.

The fun is always in trying to figure out how to make something work!

Yes, the cooler is secured to the plate (the plate is cutout to take the cooler) plus two anchor brackets to the cross tube making it very secure. I also have a smaller bevel box cooler secured behind the oil cooler.

I have Emil’s (morgancustom) kit on my 3W. It is very well engineered and mounts solidly. He has a few videos on his web site illustrating his design.

It does not have an electric fan. It has an inline oil thermostat. I preferred this method temperature regulation as will not circulate cold oil and I did not want to run wires or switches for a cooling fan.

I also prefer the kits aesthetics to others, as they match those of Morgan’s design.

I had seen his and it looks very well done. I always enjoy figuring out how I can do something myself (right now figuring out how to put a GL1200 front end on a GL1000). I am curious if his cooler has 3/8 or 1/2 inlets. All the cooler cores I see for motorcycles are 3/8.

Exactly why I used the HD bypass which only bypasses oil at temp. Plus, I had it sitting on the shelf. The folks at Ultracool do not make a temp activated bypass... "they stop working", they tell me. Well, if it stops working and is stuck open, cold oil flows, and if it sticks closed it doesn't circulate.... either way you replace the bypass.

The wire was rather simply, but I did thread it through vinyl tubing to add extra protection. I think you can actually see the extra vinyl on one of the wires in the upside down picture of the bypass.

One of the down sides of the S&S engine is the oil flow to the filter. Modern cars and Harleys the filter is right after the pump, hence more pressure. On the S&S the filter is right before the oil goes to the sump, so lower pressure. Adding a restriction to cold oil flow easily leads to back up in the engine.

This looks like Emil's work. I'm tempted. But no fan or thermostat, correct? What kind of consistent oil temps are you seeing?

One of the things I might add, having been riding motorcycles for nearly 50 years, is the obvious. The bigger the engine, the more heat is generated. Honda dealt with this in 1975 by making the gold wing. 1000cc and a water cooled engine. This went to 1100cc's, then 1200, then 1500 and finally the 1800.

V-twins got larger and larger relying on air cooling. As Harley moved to the 107ci they added water cooling to the heads of the full touring models (concealed in the fairing "lowers") and oil cooling to the more stripped down touring models (e.g. road king) and the road king had an optional "fan kit" for the oil cooler.

Our M3W's have a 124c1 engine (as big as an 1800 Goldwing). While the transverse mount provides exceptional cooling going down the road, especially to the exhaust side, there is really nothing to dissipate the heat when not moving. Exactly why Morgan added the fan at low speeds.

Correct the oil cooler has no fan just a bypass thermostat, keeps the oil between 155 - 168 degrees rising to 172 on very hot days and climbing the steep mountain roads.

Has anyone installed the oil cooler under the cowl?

I've often wondered whether this might be a useful source of heat during the winter months. A little fan blowing the hot air onto our feet might be rather a good idea. #ToastyToes
