These American type shave clubs are certainly being pushed in the UK

There must be a lot of profit in the them so makes me think the products are cheap

Yes and no.... I have spent a little while with a Private Equity company going through some of the numbers.

They make their money on the fact that once you're a subscriber you order more higher margin products from them and tend to renew your subscription (low churn). The initial mailing item (the razor) is either free or at cost.

The advantage of these services is that the supply to the customer is automatic (monthly or quarterly mailings etc) and it saves the customer having to visit a chemist. However, Amazon can do all of this pretty easily - so it's quite competitive.

Harrys are running at a loss to compete right now.

As above, Gillette are pricing themselves out. Gillette were one of the first companies to offer a very cheap, but high quality razor with more expensive consumable blades. Their razors from the 1940's - 1960's were superb... the Slim and Fatboys in particular. Their wartime 'Tech' razors were excellent too. I collect them. smile

I run the leccy buzzsaw over my chin once a week and that's it. I have a little pile of Gillette razors rust gently in the corner of the cupboard. I did use a badgers brush and penhaligon's soap which always felt nice. Once I had my bag lost by an airline on a long haul and I was given a disposable 2 blade blue BIC. The lady smiled as she gave it to me and said, if all else fails you can use this. She was not kidding. BIC the ripper.

Your mention of Amazon offering subscription packages now which means a lot of these companies are going to find it difficult. Amazon's prices remain as competitive as ever.

I have used a couple of the amazon buttons (both actual hardware ones and also the app/web page virtual buttons for re-order on demand and find these really useful. As soon as you get low you just hit the button. I prefer this model to the monthly fixed subscriptions of the individual clubs. As mentioned the use rate varies a lot.

I did feel a bit bad about using shipment for a single item however when I worked out what my mpg and cost per mile total was compared to the delivery driver it seemed quite good for the planet. Given I always recycle the cardboard I feel less evil now. Our delivery driver typically has 30-40 deliveries in Whitchurch so his incremental distance is quite small for it. The trunking to a local shop would be the same otherwise.
