So it is better to use better quality water of bottles. In Cologne the water is extremely calcareous.

I definitely don’t like the idea of coffee made with eau de cologne

Eau de Cologne is meanwhile a fragrance for 80+ consumers.

If coffee is bad for you, I should be dead, I’m on my fourth bean to cup machine!

Many years ago, I had the stove top thing, then a Gaggia classic, but they’re far too much clutter, clanging about and cleaning. I’m up before the rest of my household, a cup of consistently good coffee at the push of a button and a machine that cleans itself is a godsend. These machines are criticised by coffee snobs, but if like me you only want black coffee, they can be tuned to perfection.

Beans do make a huge difference, but I don’t like Robusta and I generally go for light to medium roast. In my opinion, ( which statistically must be wrong or they’d all be out of business), 99% of coffee shops serve nasty coffee.

The best test of the skill of a coffee shop is a Flat white, when out and about, that’s what I order, but very few can do it right, I can’t recall all the good ones I’ve found, but Wellingtons In Edinburgh and North tea Power in Manchester are the two best, you don’t have a yard stick until you’ve tried theirs.

In Milano an espresso coffee is tossed down like medicine, in Napoli taking coffee can almost be a ritual. In Sicily it is a moment of relax and one takes time to savour the coffee.

Water is extremely important. If there is calcium in the water it can make the coffee bitter. The water in Napoli and Catania makes excellent coffee.

Have a look here at this (older) statistic:
In norway people nearly drink twice as much coffee as in Germany or Italy!
Coffee consumption per capita
This is one from very few statistics that I trust.
In Norway you often have to pay the first cup of coffee...

I also like the system to buy a mug from a gasoline group and get coffee for free the whole year at all gas station of this group.
OK it is not always the best coffee, but if we have a short rest in the norwegian mountains (hood down, no sidescreen) ist tasted not so bad snow

I don't own a capsule machine - I can see the attraction, but somehow it doesn't taste as good as fresh ground coffee from a decent machine. I have Gaggia espresso machine and have one or maybe two coffees a day.

Despite experimenting over the years, I always fall back on Illy coffee - but I'm always on the lookout for new coffees. I came across this one recently in a cafe, I liked it so much I asked to see the bag! But unfortunately cannot find it anywhere:

If you like caffè latte and you are in Trieste you must order a "Capo in b". It is not exactly a cappuccino in a glass (bicchiere) nor is it a caffè latte. In fact, in Trieste, if you order a caffè latte you will get a cappuccino.

Strangely in the Italian parts of Sydney if you order a caffè latte you will most likely get a capo in b. Somehow the custom for this style of caffè arrived in Sydney smile

The glass used for a capo in b probably holds less volume than a cappuccino cup so the result, to me, seems a stronger cup of coffee but perhaps the layered visual effect makes the coffee taste better.

PS. Illy coffee is from Trieste smile

One of the best cups of coffee I have had is served at a little Italian cafe in devizes (£1.75 for an Americano). The owner grinds the beans differently dependant on the weather (humidity) which he assures me makes the difference.
Unfortunately a caffeine intolerance limits my visits to a couple of times a week.
For the rest of the week I drink Waitrose decaf pods which are very acceptable.
