It is and they do make a very good strong espresso with a little crema if you are lucky but they are not without their issues

For one thing most are aluminium and there is debate on aluminium (like the pods) particles getting in the coffee when it’s used

Because I have an induction hob, I’ve got a stainless steel Alessi Moka pot which I do sometimes use if I’ve bought some freshly roasted beans

I do struggle getting a crema with mine but there is another make of moka pot (I think it’s beirletta) that has a retardant flow valve that allows water pressure to build up and then releases to try to force the water through the grinds at high enough pressure to caramelise the sugars. I’ve never tried it but YouTube videos suggest it works but with all these things it will be hit and miss depending on the grind etc

If you are wanting to grind your own coffee then a good quality burr grinder is essential so you get a consistent grind without ‘fines’

I sold my Gaggia MDF grinder a while ago and now just have a high quality hand burr grinder made by Zassenhaus which I use occasionally

Also handy to have a grinder that runs slow to avoid overheating the beans and a glass receptacle to avoid static buildup. We use one of these:

It is also important not only to have experienced "the best" coffee but also to see what the general coffee standard is e.g. in a country like Italy.
Every time I go to Italy, I look forward to an espresso or cappuccino at "Autogrill".

I just wanted to write about it and I found this text of an American in the web which says it all:
Autogrill is a fast food chain located inside gas stations. They have fresh-squeezed orange juice from local oranges, fresh-made espresso, and fresh-made panini. Those 3 things alone represent such a vast difference between the food culture here and there.
You’re not going to have the best espresso of your life there. But you’re going to have a really, really good espresso, and it’s a gas station. In Italy, just because you’re on the road, it doesn’t mean that you should sacrifice the way you’re eating

Just to add Autogrill has impressive huge Cimbalis probably the biggest I know. That always looks stunning.

Correct not Italian Peter, When I worked I would have many coffees in the office ( commercial Nespresso pods). SSO now just two is sufficient with copious amounts of tea. Coupled with the odd red, white or G&T.

Cheers

I’m with Stewart on this one. I’m fussy about recycling and using decent quality unadulterated ingredients and don’t mind paying for it....so Nespresso for me. As you well know Peter 😉 and I blame a stay at a B&B near Stresa for converting me!

I wish I had my machine here in Thailand as the coffee so far is dreadful😟

One more for Nespresso, I'm fully leaded and the Boss is strictly decaf. I think she was also hoping George Clooney would pop round to collect the recycling bag!

I'm a recent (2 years ish) convert to coffee, still can't stand instant. As others have mentioned, there are surprising variations in the offerings available on the high street. I am always amazed at the seeming popularity of the big chains, despite the dishwater they seem to peddle!

At home we use a moka but I have used an espresso machine that uses ground coffee. It was fast to heat from cold and absolutely no effort to clean. Have a look at https://www.delonghi.com/en-gb/products/coffee/coffee-makers/pump-espresso

The actual machine I used was the Dedica Style EC 685

I liked it so much that I would buy one tomorrow but we have a very small kitchen and there really isn't a place to put it.

You think you have a small kitchen ! I still have room for one of these

This is our line up of caffetterie: 2 Alessi Conica of varying sizes and a one cup Bialetti. I don't particular like the Bialetti, other than being aluminium I don't think Bialetti makes coffee as good as the Alessi.
