I had a cockpit only cover but subsequently bought one that covers the bonnet as well following a situation where rain got under the bonnet, through the firewall and into the ECU. Would highly recommend them when away from home. I agree. A tonneau serves it's purpose in a light summer shower but for a storm cover I can see no point in other than a full one. Never had any paint chaffing issues with mine as although it's light it's multiple layers provide enough stiffness to avoid flapping in most winds.

When travelling, I always bring along the cover from John Taylor (Phoenix), obviously it helps getting the water out, it also presents another barrier: it says “this is special, pls respect!’. Also, it helps against bird dropping, I found when parked at a hotel under a tree...

B) without cover on ? Not yet. A friend had someone sit on their car for a photo - left two depressions in the bonnet. Fixed by a dent removal firm. We no longer book in to big hotels that do weddings.

Hi John V6, I believe a storm cover is essential, we certainly saw torrential rain on our Italy Tour, your photograph reminds me that I should have a support across the middle of the car when the hood isn't up - but is was waterproof !

Interesting that all of these are the type that cover the bonnet.
Personally I don't think it's worth having one that only covers the cockpit - unless one doesn't have any top louvres. Much better to avoid potential starting problems if it rains overnight. The full length covers still fold up really small, so as far as I can see there's no downside and considerable advantages to the full length cover.

that I should have a support across the middle of the car when the hood isn't up I introduced a useful little tweak to my arrangement last year. I bought a few metres of 4mm shock cord from a camping/outdoor shop (Actually it was the hiking section of the Green Welly in Tyndrum). Tie a couple of loops in it, then hook it over the centre windscreen wiper mount, over the windscreen and back the rear of the car where it loops over the spare wheel T bar. No need for a high tension, it's enough to stop rain turning the cockpit area of the cover into a bucket.
