My thoughts exactly. Not enough to go around and some family members wanting out. I have a modest background in acquisitions for a private equity company, and my experience tells me the "3rd generation curse" is more likely to be related to the larger number of family members taking income from the business than it is competency of those 3rd generation family members active in the business. With each generation you have more "mouths to feed" and with that comes complex and often competing strategies on how to keep everyone happy-which is of course nigh on impossible. The problem is compounded with smaller companies, like Morgan, where just a few million pounds, more or less, available for future product/compliance investment can make or break the business.

What I meant, Kirk, was that I agreed with you that it would be difficult to see how the ltalians could make it worse but I don’t want to jinx it! Admittedly from their own blurb, they would appear to have done a good job turning Ducati around but whether that meant better service levels and more reliable product I’m not in a position to say but at least with Morgan there really is only one way those two things go as they will be starting at level zero!

Yes i can see this coming too, i started my Business from zero, my Son is playing a big part in the business now at 29, but wants to cut out his 2 younger simblings 25 & 16, he has benefited greatly now living in a very luxurios property and 2 very nice new cars on the Drive, but he wants to live the millionaires life style 'now' with the Company profits, its causing friction as i want to reinvest and start an additional side line in Manufacturing.

It's almost inevitable Dean. We saw this unfold in Devon over ten years with a hotel which was built by gen 1. Run successfully for over 50 years by gen 1 and gen 2, despite some from gen 2 not being involved. At one point they owned the only other hotel in that location. The asset was £ million plus. When gen 3 came along it imploded and everything was sold off.

Its a common happening in family businesses, I used to work in and advise owners of family businesses on future strategy and ownership. The founders and 2nd generation always struggled on how they were to leave and structure their creations to the next generation. Most often and in the case of MMC its about the DNA of the company, ensuring that it is first clearly defined and then not lost when future development and changes are inevitably made. All too often great new ideas and techniques are brought into a company. Initially they flourish but over time the DNA is lost and the company begins to lose its being and direction and either withers away or is swallowed up. Hopefully not the case in our beloved Morgan.

My son while working for a bank got to repossess a lot of the luxury a son had while driving the business into the ground
