I'll stick with my compromise of a deLonghi bean to cup machine with the classic espresso blend of beans from my local small roaster. It's set up to do a really quite good double espresso...if I want a longer coffee I add hot water to the double espresso. I don't do milk in coffee. It's not quite as good as I could get from a really good espresso machine or stove top pot with the same beans but all it involves is pressing a button then drinking the coffee.

This is our line up of caffetterie: 2 Alessi Conica of varying sizes and a one cup Bialetti. I don't particular like the Bialetti, other than being aluminium I don't think Bialetti makes coffee as good as the Alessi. As a tea drinker I really like the look of the tea pot - can't be a kettle surely - lurking behind the left hand coffee pot! Rob. It is actually a vintage Burrage and Boyle Picquotware K3 kettle. The alloy was developed specially to have a silver colour. They did make a full table service for tea and coffee too and the prices they are offered at are quite reasonable. Search for Picquotware, Picquot Ware or Newmaid. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=...re&_sacat=0

we grind our beans (I guess a bit old fashion).... but do remember that coffee consumption is linked to lower rates of prostate cancer

I am a fan of this era of design but haven't looked at Picquotware before and the hunt is now on!

And I dont really get the critism on the electricity they use
If you want a hot drink then it has to be heated somehow
I bet the electricity used by a machine to drive the pump and heat the shot for one espresso is more frugal than heating up a mocha pot on a stove
And whatever coffee is used, it’s shipped and been roasted somehow by someone Always open to having my perspective changed, I've been doing a bit of research. It is indeed true that a coffee machine uses less energy to produce a cup of coffee than a stove-top moka pot, so thanks for pointing that out Stewart, I have an opportunity to improve here. Even though I am on a 100% green electricity supply, it still makes no sense to consume more than necessary. However this is more than offset by the energy needed to make and recycle the aluminium pods, and also the packaging that the pods come in. Recycling is better than waste, but it's still worse than removing the need to recycle in the first place. The answer therefore appears to be to use an espresso machine but use home-ground beans. There is a local coffee roaster to me that ships the green beans in large traditional hessian or paper sacks, roasts the beans themselves and packages them in paper bags. They can be purchased from my local Farmer's Market, easily accessible by bicycle. Illy beans which come in steel cans remain a reasonable alternative I think. I have therefore ordered a suitable coffee machine and will report back on findings.
