I agree, it is easy to get it, so why should I risk meeting a Police office that is in a bad mood. I got it from my post office without any hassle, and I'm good for my travels. Here is a nice map of countries that want you to have the IDP.

I have to say that I thought all EU licences had validity in all EU countries. There is an exception that I know of and that is an EU licence gained by exchange with a non EU licence may not be valid in a country that does not have a bilateral exchange agreement with the country of the original licence.
I notice that most EU countries on this map do not require an IDP. I'm quite surprised that they say Belgium requires it. I would have thought only for non EU licences.

You have to re-apply for you driving licence when you reach 70 years-of-age. You have to surrender your paper licence.
However I understand it is increasingly more difficult to hire a car when you reach a certain age. Have any TMers had any problems? We used to have that issue when my late F-I-L visited us here from Spain. Got worse at 80 but we never failed to hire him one. It just cost. Insurance for cars and bikes here in the UK becomes more difficult over 70 or at least more expensive

In Australia I used my Austrian driving license and had no request for an International DP.
Once a translation was required.
My daughter stayed there for 2 years with multiple rent a car trips and never had a problem either (she had no IDP)

That would not actually be legal and she risked a fine. She should have obtained an Australian driving licence which is very simple on a license exchange basis.
