Completely irrelevant if you drive up and down the M6 as I do. If I average 45mph it is a cause for huge celebration.
 I know the feeling

Unfortunately this is another one of those things that will be forced on us because there are some total idiots out there. We were out for a walk today when a big quad bike came past us at about 90 kph on a busy 50 kph road. Just behind us he blew his horn and my first thought was that he was blowing at us walking on the footpath, then I saw a car start to emerge from a side street about 50 metres ahead. The idiot had plenty of time to slow down but swerved about half the lane without slowing. I remarked to that if he had had an accident I would have felt compelled to testify on behalf of the car driver. The quad rider really qualified as irresponsible and dangerous. This is the sort of behaviour that brings about the proliferation of ever more restrictive rules.

I've just had a very nasty experience with the speed limiter in my new Volvo XC40. I was on a 70 mph duel carriage way when I went under a bridge on which the speed limit was 40 mph. The speed limiter registered this and banged the brakes on very hard. It is very fortunate that there was no one behind me.
I;m not so keen on speed limiters now.

Rolls Royce produced a car in about 1906 called the Legalimit, which was incapable of exeding the 20 mph speed limit. It didn't sell.

I imagine it will be a software tweek to enable/disable as I’m sure the USA won’t embrace this. Post Brexit I can’t imagine the government giving up the speed camera revenue! I can however imagine Mr Trump rubbing his hands together as he thinks about a post Brexit deal that will boost the struggling US car manufacturing market.

If the recognition of traffic signs is to be used as the basis for the maximum speed limit, it must be improved. With my tintop (MY2017) traffic signs are often not recognized or misinterpreted (e.g. signs at the rear of trucks). If such a regulation should actually come, I assume that there will be exceptions for small manufacturers like Morgan. For details regarding Intelligent Speed Adaptation see here.

This means that, in effect, you were not in control of the car even though you would have been liable for any potentially unfortunate outcome. I also wonder whether the rear brake lights are applied in this situation: if not, a rear shunt could easily occur.

An idea from same people who designed the 'smart motorway' no doubt.

I once watched some Autonomous braking displays on the Tarmac Lake at Donington - it didn't end well !
