Just try a car out with one fitted before you take the plunge. I was keen to get one for my 4/4 but having sat in one fitted with a factory bar I found my head was very close to it. I’m only 5’ 8”.

A very good point - also consider the need to use a 4 or 5-point harness and a helmet. In an accident even without a rollover, a conventional 3-point safety belt isn't going to be able to keep you securely in place and there's potential for some pretty nasty head injuries should you contact the roll bar.

Personally, I don't believe that (outside competition/track days of course) the risk of rolling is high enough to warrant having a roll bar. My strategy of avoiding crashing in the first place seems to have worked fine for the last 20 years

Your point is valid. I started to use roll bars when a passing tractor dumped hay bales on me. We also find them very useful for things like tying extending ladders to (like you do) and anything sizeable which requires transporting - there is a photo on here somewhere of a very large painting on the back of our last Morgan.
A fig for those who say Mogs are impractical.

I’m not intending to use the car on track days wearing a crash helmet so would be surprised if the roll bar is so close to ones head as to be a safety concern.
I have to say I’ve never previously considered the need for a roll bar in a convertible ... however, after my recent “prince Phillip” incident its delusional to think that by careful driving you can avoid the possibility to roll a car. If I had seen the car pull out (I didn’t) I may have tried to cut around it and would most likely ended up going down a steep bank and likely rolling the vehicle.
I accept a 3-point inertia reel seat belt is not as good as a 4 or 5 point race harness... it surely a std seat belt and roll bar is safer than nothing at all?

That is a very good point Ian for those of us that live in the heart of the country, about 5 years ago the Cellist from ELO group was driving a Transit van when one of the large circular bales crushed him to death on the Totnes road. It was particularly sad as he was just recovering from cancer and still entertained locally.

Those bales are very dangerous. I knew someone who was crushed to death in a field when one rolled and he though he could stop it 😳

We all have different views on risk and safety, and the 'right' decision about what is or is not 'safe' is an intensely personal one.

If you want a roll bar and can find one to suit your needs, then go for it. Heaven forbid you should ever need it. Personally I've not seen an arrangement that I'd be happy to use without a 4-point harness.
